I Had Never Been On A Radio Show Before, So I Had No Idea What To Expect.
I certainly didn't expect the Santa Clarita Business Hour to be punctuated by reports of a suicide attempt on the 14 Freeway. (Click here to see my behind the scenes video)
I certainly didn't expect that the segments I was recording would be punctuated by reports from the steps of the Capitol Building in Sacramento.
I certainly didn't expect to be sandwiched between a Senator and the Secretary of Education.
However, It did make for some interesting moments off the air and some interesting segment transitions. I'm not sure what RealEstateShows.com has to do with California budget issues or school reform, but I'm sure it will all come together for me here soon.
I was graciously invited to be a guest by fellow ActiveRain member, Pablo Santibanez. Pablo regularly co-hosts the Santa Clarita Business Hour on KHTS 1220, our local radio station here in Santa Clarita. And he does a great job. This broadcast won't be available for podcast for a bit, but you can listen to some of the old segments at the link above.
Pablo was completely caught off guard by the remote feed from the Capital steps and the fact that no one was there to do the lead in to the Show or the sign off. He mentioned to me before we began that things don't always go as planned. Boy was he right. From my vantage point, the hour had the feel of a variety show with no theme. Still enjoyable, but you're not sure what to call it.
We laughed about it afterwards.
The first segment was with a Senator Dick Ackerman, from Riverside. Then a news break to bring us all up to speed on the status of the freeway "jumper." Then a second short segment with the Senator. Then me. Then a segment with the California Secretary of Education, David Long, Ph.D. Then me, again.
OK! Now I do see a theme. State Budget Cuts | inexpensive Internet Tour. Education Reform | Easy To Use Internet Tour.
Pablo let it all roll off his back like a pro. Me? I was having a good time looking at all the cool equipment and taking in the atmosphere of breaking news and the behind the scenes efforts of the folks who make radio work. It was a blast.
So, this is a thank you to Pablo. Thank you for inviting me and for making it a very interesting hour.
