If You Are Gonna Do It In The Summer -- Do It Early!

5:05 a.m.  It's about when the sun starts rising here in Arizona.  What that means is - by 8am - it's HOT.  Now that it's monsoon season - it's HOT and HUMID!  So if you are going to do anything outside - you better do it early!

My previous post provided some things those of us living in Arizona can do to beat the heat during the hot summer months.  Here are some more everyday things that you can do - and do early - to beat the heat:

Get your grocery shopping done.  Most stores here in Tucson, including Safeway and Bashas open by 5am.  Some open at 6am.  Aside from the benefit of not having to walk across a hot parking lot to unload groceries, you also can beat a lot of crowds and get the pick of fresh produce that is put out overnight.  Need to get some household supplies, or for many of us that have this on our "lists" - school supplies?  Walmart is open 24 hours a day!

Exercise.  It is not wise to exercise outdoors when it is so hot.  A better idea is hit the streets or track early.  Many running trails and high school tracks are open for early walkers, runners and cyclists. Saguaro National Monument Park is one with an 8-mile loop and beautiful scenery. Exercising early gets your workout done, you'll avoid traffic, see spectacular sunrises and spot many dessert creatures venturing out for the morning.  Riding up Mt. Lemmon early also has it's benefits - there is very little traffic and the sunrises are gorgeous.  While riding down Mt. Lemmon this morning, I stopped to take in the beauty of the mountains, and took this "self photo" as the sun rose over the mountains.

Yard work.  Here in Pima County, the rule is "no operating loud machinery before 6am" (or something close to that!) in neighborhoods.  But at 5:05am - you can get a lot done - pull out that hula hoe and tackle the weeds - rake the yard up and by the time 6:00am rolls around - mow the grass and your done!

Clean the pool!  And then jump in for a refreshing swim afterwards!

And if you get all that done - 5:05 a.m. is the perfect time to sit out on the back porch, with your coffee and relax and listen to "nothing" but the desert noises - birds, quail and the sound of rabbits hopping around.  You can also use this time to blog, pay your bills online, review new listings on MLS or anything else that you need to get done -- before it gets too HOT!

Enjoy and stay cool!

Gabrielle,

I agree. Gettting it done first thing in the morning makes for a more satisfied day.

Hi Gabrielle, I never realized how the summer heat really affects your outdoor activities out there in AZ. I guess it's no different than us dealing with snowstorms in the winter, you just deal with it and adapt to your given environment and get used to it. It'd still take sun over snow any day.

GOOD MORNING DAN!  It really does - it's funny that every time I get an invitation to a party in the summer -- my first question is "what time and is it outside?"!  Nice thought about the snow.  I used to live in Germany and though it's been a while, I can still remember the challenges! But I agree with you -- it's a lot easier to cool down than warm up!  Nice to see you here! -- Gab

GOOD MORNING GREG!  You are right -- it really does - saves the end of the day for other things that come up - like showing a house or playing with the kids!  Thanks for the comment -- Gab
