Why You Should Listen to Your Mother...

So my son Connor (19) tells me last week he's going to head to Eastern Washington to go river rafting. He's never gone river rafting, and gets sick anytime he's in any moving vehicle other than a car so I'm not really sure what the appeal was for him.  Of course I immediatly think about the movie "The River Wild" where bad guy Kevin Bacon takes Meryl Streep hostage and forces her to navigate the rushing white-water rapids...

I tell my son "I don't think it's a good idea, it's dangerous and I'll worry".

"Don't worry," he tells me, "It's actually more of a river float...we'll just lay in the raft and float from Ellensburg to Yakima".

Ok, that makes me feel slightly better. But then I think about the movie Deliverance where...well, most of us know how that movie goes.

But I zip my lip and decide to let him have his adventure.

Fast forward to Saturday night and I get this text message:

"Wow, rough day on the river. Don't worry everyone's alive, battery dying will check in later."

I didn't hear from him until the next day and it sounded pretty scary. They were only in the water 5 minutes but couldn't keep their rafts together, Connor hit a tree and was sucked underneath it, losing his raft. He made it to shore and was able to help a few other people who were being pulled down the river as well. The Swiftwater Rescue team was called in to assist several people.

Evidently no one knew that the Dam had recently been released so the water was moving much faster than normal. Seems to me a notice should be placed somewhere along the banks were people normally put in the river?

But what do I know?

I'm just a Mom.

Colleen - I did the white water rafting thing once and that was enough for me.  I still look at that photo and wonder what was I thinking?

I've never been white water rafting, probably because I don't want to get my hair wet, LOL. No, seriously, tearing down the river at a million miles an hour with the possibility of being smashed to smithereens on the rocks doesn't hold a lot of appeal for me. I'm glad your son made it through that experience OK. Lots of people do it unscathed, but still. Will he listen to you the next time? Ha, ha, probably not.

I've been white water rafting Colleen and have lived to tell about it going on a fast moving river in California. You do need to be safe though. Many in my group wouldn't even attempt it. I thought it was a blast and even had to jump in the icy cold water. Some things as a son you tell Mom later on, after you are done, not to have her worry. It is part of the son code of conduct with Moms. ; )

Colleen, I'm very glad that he is okay.  There is supposedly a man-made white water rafting place in Maryland somewhere (I have to ask Lenn about it) that is a very controlled situation, and supposedly very safe.  I read about it in my AAA magazine.  I suggested it to my sons and both looked at me like I was crazy.  I guess that's a good thing, but I still want to go try it!

They hate those words "I told you so." Just as we hate the words "mom, I know what I'm doing."  My son Mountain CLimbs and each and every time my heart is in my throat until I get a call that he is back on sea level ground! I try not to panic or worry and I keep asking him why??  What is it?  He says because he can and it is there.... ok I guess.   ugggghhh... They wonder why my hair is all gray!

Glad it turned out ok for him.  I've floated that river many times. Went to college at Central and lived in Ellensburg for 10 years.  Loved it there.  Miss living in WA all the time. Hope he has better luck next time.

Colleen,

Yikes! Glad your son and his friends are okay!  I'm curious though....did they go with a guide?  Because if they did, the guide should be fired....those rafting companies are supposed to be on top of whitewater conditions, and instruct their rafters accordingly.  We went rafting one time (it was starting to snow, and we had to wear wetsuits so we wouldn't freeze to death)....I don't remember how they class the rapids but I do remember they were classed as pretty rough....so rough that the rafts were equipped with bungee-ish cords or something that we had to tuck our legs under so we wouldn't fall out. And the guide instructed us what to do if we did fall out (safety tip ahead: if you fall out, do not try to stand up in the water...instead float down until the current carries you to safety or somebody pulls you in their boat...otherwise you're prone to drowning)....

We'd done lots of whitewater rafting before that trip, but from what I remember that's the last time we went.

Oh, one last nerdy detail....sounds like your son and his friends were ahead of the dam release.....because when there's a dam release, it raises the water level and slows down the rapids (at least that's what our guide on our Death Rapids trip told us....we were apparently ahead of the release....unless he was lying just to keep me from screaming, which is entirely possible).
