Before buying waterfront property, it is essential to learn these definitions.  There are three types of properties. 1) Riverfront or waterfront property, defined as having the river out your back door.  Your property borders the river and you live on the river, 2) Riverview or water view property, defined where you have a view of the river, but your property doesn't border the river, and 3) River access or water access property, defined as having access to the river (your property doesn't border the river, and you don't see the river). With river access or water access property, you are just a short walk or drive away from enjoying the river.  Whatever type of lifestyle you desire, we'll be able to help!

Catawba River Basin Highlights:

The Catawba River and the Wateree River form one river basin that begins in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina and flows through the Charlotte metropolitan area into Lake Wateree in South Carolina, where its name changes to the Wateree River. The Wateree River eventually joins with the Congaree River in Lake Marion.

The Catawba-Wateree River was originally home to the Catawba Indian Tribe, self-identified "people of the river" and the Wateree Tribe, whose name comes from a Catawban word meaning "to float on the water."  Today the Catawba-Wateree basin is the home of approximately 2 million people.

The headwaters of the Catawba River extend from the slopes of Grandfather Mountain, near Blowing Rock to the mountains near Old Fort, North Carolina. The Catawba-Wateree River flows for 350 miles long from its headwaters to the confluence with the Congaree. The basin has approximately 3500 miles of waterways that flow through 14 counties in two states (North Carolina and South Carolina).  There are eleven major lakes in the basin and the dams that form these lakes have a major impact on the flow of the river.

Today, most of the Catawba River is dammed.  The largest "free flowing" section of the Catawba River is a 30-mile section of the river below Lake Wylie, which was recently designated as a South Carolina Scenic River.  This section of the river includes the largest grove of Spider Lilies in the world (approximately 160 acres), as well as a historical canal, and it ends in Lake Wateree where the Catawba River joins the Wateree River.  The Wateree River feeds Lake Wateree and then meanders for approximately 80 miles to Lake Marion.  Most of the major tributaries of the Catawba River are truly free flowing and many of them (including Wilson Creek) have challenging sections of whitewater.  One of the major tributaries of the Catawba is the Linville River as it flows through Linville Gorge, a National Wilderness Area.

North Carolina Highlights:

Stretching from the Appalachian Mountains in the west to the sun baked Outer Banks of the Atlantic Coast, North Carolina is a diverse and exciting state. North Carolina is home to over 8 million people and boasts nearly 600 golf courses and 3,300 miles of shoreline.

Much of North Carolina's mountain region is covered by hardwood forests whose leaves display vibrant colors each fall and certain High Country areas experience over 30 inches of snow a year. This magical mountain region features some of the most remarkable skiing, luxury and vacation real estate on the east coast.  Summers in the North Carolina Mountains are cool and refreshing, making outdoor adventuring a true pleasure. Some of the finest mountain scenery on the east coast can be found along the 250 miles of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Parkway, which includes the tallest peak (6,684 ft.) in the Eastern United States and the "Grand Canyon of the East" at Linville Gorge.  The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to the widest variety of plant and animal life on the continent.  The Davidson River in Transylvania County has been rated as one of the Top 100 Trout Streams in the U.S. by Trout Unlimited.  Approximately 300 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail span North Carolina.  North Carolina's Western National Forests are some of the state's best outdoor assets.  Scenic vistas, remote gorges, sheer rock walls, wild rivers, waterfalls, and high mountains offer some of the best outdoor opportunities in the state.

Gentle rolling foothills, glistening lakes and picturesque farmland define the central Piedmont region. This fast growing area is known for its high tech industries based around the renowned Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. The NC Piedmont has of one of the most dynamic economies in the country and is home to North Carolina's largest cities and financial institutions. Golfers love the area's collection of world-class golf course communities and resort real estate as well as the mild year round temperatures and 200 days of sunshine a year.  Believed to be the oldest mountains in North America, the ancient Uwharrie Mountains (less than an hour south of Greensboro and about the same distance east of Charlotte) are increasingly used as a venue for competitions described as either "extreme," "ultra" or "adventure." The Dan River, flowing freely through Rockingham County, has been dubbed the "lazy river" because of its leisurely and relaxing pace.  This makes it well suited for paddlers of any skill level.  During a trip down the Dan, paddlers can see remains of the past, from Native American relics 300 to 10,000 years old to remaining sites of the Saura Indian tribe.

The state's barrier islands and coastal towns are pristine and inviting. The 130 mile long Cape Hatteras National Seashore, America's first National Seashore, is one of this nation's great natural treasures.  The Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores are home to four beautiful lighthouses.  The storied NC Outer Banks, the barrier islands that act as a physical sand buffer between the Atlantic Ocean and the shallow sounds, feature pristine beaches and giant sand dunes. One very interesting aspect of these seashores is the abundance of wooden shipwrecks, which at times can be seen in the surf, along the beach and back in the dunes.  This area is also known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the abundance of these wrecks. The Croatan National Forest in eastern North Carolina encompasses many ecosystems from salt marshes, swamps, pocosins and long leaf pine savannahs.  Water virtually surrounds the forest with Bogue Sound on the south and crisscrossed with other tidal rivers and creeks. With such a diverse topography, the plant and animal life is diverse as well. The coastal region has always been a paradise for fishing and boating enthusiasts and the new coastal communities offer extraordinary oceanfront, waterfront and marina access properties for all lifestyles.
