The Baby's Have Hatched!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

On Saturday Cyndee Haydon posted In Clearwater, Florida ~ Who left that Fowl Trail? then I followed her lead with My Photos Of Some Florida Birds, I showed you a photo of a Brown Thrasher nesting.

Monday morning I arrived at work to find a young man cutting the hedges, right where the nest was. My heart dropped! He was using good old fashioned manual hedge trimmers but I was panicked. I unlocked the office, dropped my purse, camera and lunch and told him "STOP, there's a nest!" I think I scared him...

I ran to the other side of the bushes where the nest was, found it covered in leaves, no mama, took a deep breath and moved the leaves. Three newly hatched baby birds lay in the nest very, very still. I carefully touched each baby and made sure they were breathing, then I began breathing again.. I thought this is probably the only chance I'll have to get a shot of these little guys and not make the mama any madder then she already is.

After the young man with the trimmers left, and I warned the other young man with the gas powered hedge trimmers to stay away (I said please). I watched the mama bird run back and forth and finally jump back into the nest.

My heart finally relaxed.

I kept an eye on them the rest of the day and their little bird life seemed to go back to normal.

Today I brought my tripod with me and was able to capture them looking blindly for mama to feed them. I used the 32X digital zoom for this photo.

I also took the tripod to the back of the office to try to shoot video and stills of my friend the Red Winged Blackbird. He of course was very cooperative!

He wasn't alone though, he was in the middle of a quiet "stand off" with a regular blackbird at the top of his tree when I got set up.

The standoff took to the air quickly, I wasn't expecting it, they weren't "yelling at each other" like normal. They moved fast, I couldn't keep up, but I was able to catch this shot..

He then returned to the top of his tree the proud victor

I took video on Monday of him singing without the tripod and today with it, but here's the deal, I can't get all my video's uploaded on youtube. Today's aren't going in for some reason. Anyone that has any suggestions, please feel free to send my your 2 cents on this. Here is the video I shot yesterday so you can hear how pretty he sings.

Lysa - Those are great photos!  And SO lucky that you stopped the maintenance kid before he hacked up the nest!

I love the shots of the blackbird and RedWing.  You take amazing photos!  Keep it up!

Great pictures and video.  I remember Red Winged Black birds when I was a kid, before coming to Hawaii.

AWESOME photos, Lysa!!  I played the video of your red winged blackbird and my cats all froze!  LOL!  Must have thought he was in the house.  I'm so relieved for the baby birds!  You had me scared for a minute there.

Looking forward to more!

Lysa, you had my heart in my throat for a a minute there.  Imagine if you had arrived just 5 minutes later!  You're so wonderful.  You're a one-woman audobon society!  I am glad the babies are OK.

I need to record my cat getting attacked by the birds outside.  We get such a laugh out of it.  Most of the time the cat is just minding her business and the birds will just plummet down and try to peck her.  The cat has gotten wise and when she doesn't want to be bothered she just goes under the trampoline.  The bird knows better than to take her on under there.  LOL

Tchaka, Thanks!! By yesterday afternoon, both parents are back to scurrying around looking for food and tending to the babies :)

Carol, You and me both! He really was so shocked that he didn't see the nest. Thank you for the compliments, I love the Red-wing, he seems to like me, and his lady looks forward to the crackers I leave.

Joan, Thanks! I'm glad you got the video to work. Steve tried on his puter last night after Terry mentioned she couldn't get it to work and he couldn't either. I wonder why? That's too funny about your dogs!

Randy, I have never noticed the Red-wing blackbird before. They apparently live near water, perhaps that is why. Glad you enjoyed it!

Sarah, I was as scared as you were! My cats haven't reacted at all when I play the video's, I guess they are used to sounds coming from my desk lol.

Maggie, LOL I just love nature! I think I was more shocked the young man was using manual trimmers and relieved. Imagine if he hadn't been?

Yes you do need to shoot video of the birds chasing your poor kitty lol. Poor thing!

Good save with those babies, Lysa. I wish we had some low laying hedges or trees around our house. We do have a few birds around that nest in our trees, but everything around is too tall. My kids would love seeing stuff like this.

Hi Randy and thanks! It took years for me to see this, don't give up! Until then bring the kids to the puter and show them the pictures :) I would love to bring a ladder to the office to check out the other nest of the Red-winged blackbird, it's a lot higher then I thought and the female was behaving as if she was feeding babies the last two days.

Cynthia, Awe shucks! No, I'm not a pro but thank you so much! I hear all it takes is selling one photo to call yourself a pro, but I think I'm aways from that :)
