Have you ever said the wrong thing to the wrong person?

Probably.  I know I have!

Throughout my years, I have come to realize that there are two things you never talk about with customers, even if they bring up either subject.

Politics

  1. Religion
  2. Politics

These two topics are so controversial that I make it a point, never to talk or even bring them up. If someone asks me my religion, I am as vague as possible. There are still people out there that will discriminate based on religion or who you would vote for during the next election.  I don't want to lose a customer because of the way he chooses to worship on his or her chosen Sabbath Day.

Even my client Christmas Card List is as non political as I can possibly make it.  I try to send a simple "Peace on Earth' message to anyone I feel might be offended by the mention of or a picture of the Christian blessings or the Nativity Scene.

And watch out about the political jokes too. In some families they take politics very seriously, and if you laugh at a husband's joke making fun of the democrats, you might offend the wife, who has always been a democrat, and you would never even know it.

So watch out for what you say.

Life is a Journey!  Open the windows and enjoy the breeze.

Mary Ann, I agree but I always find myself having to bite my lip.  I have strong opinions on those topics and it's really hard to hold back.  But it is best to keep quiet on those things.

It's hard.  It's so hard.  It's very hard to bite your tongue.  But, sometimes . . . . .

You are so right about politics and religion.  Don't touch them with a ten foot pole.

My question is: Was Jesus a liberal or a conservative? But, of course, we shouldn't be talking about religion and politics. Sorry. Mike C

Hi Mary Ann- Someone once told me the same thing, as those are two subjects people get REALLY passionate about and will take offense to, so I have always avoided those subjects as well. Additionally, I have a 3rd topic that I avoid, which is "sports teams". Talking about a "fans" team can turn them off to your entire conversation. Great post!
