Puppet Show on ActiveRain

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

sockpuppetThe comment of the evening is:

"I liked your post on this particular topic. I look forward to more rain from you."

That's kinda catchy isn't it?

I was comment stalking someone this evening....  It is not the first time.

You can comment stalk me here: My comments

That leads you to part of the puppet show.

The member I was comment stalking said "I liked your post on this particular topic. I look forward to more rain from you."  over and over no matter what the post was about.

I added a little something extra to it each time...  I said ""I liked your post on this particular topic. I look forward to more rain from you."

Efficient commenting (cutting and pasting the same comment in on multiple posts over and over) drives me crazy...

Efficient commenters turn off your My Comments and then we won't be able to see you cutting and pasting the same comment in over and over and WHO is involved in the little puppet show in your market.

Other popular comments in that little corner of the world?

"Thanks for sharing your insights on this subject. Keep blogging and I will read"

and

Thanks for sharing your local information with me today. I look forward to more news "

It just so happens that although I never say that type of thing, I did this evening to encourage someone.  Weird that you say you don't like it.  I was cruising around and stumbled on someone whom I had never read before.  I'll stay out of your territory with such precursory comments for sure.

Maureen - There are few things that bother me more than cut-and-paste comments.

Not sure what a "precursor comment" is.  So you are posting the same comment in over and over?  IMHO hide your comments so that no one can see that you are cutting and pasting to encourage people.

I think more people are turned off by insincere comments than encouraged by it.

I have not seen anyone come up with a sincere comment that can be cut and pasted into 10 posts a day.   They've tried.

I am all for encouraging blogging but cutting and pasting a welcome or the same comment over and over doesn't look encouraging or sincere to me.

These 3 or 4 people are pasting in the comments on one anothers posts....

Jason I think this goes beyond just the cutting and pasting. It's a different kind of networking.

Maureen:  More spam.  I hear that spam is not good for you.  Too much salt.  Filled with Nitrates.  And, more or less, totally worthless.

Why do folks even bother with this spammy nonsense ?  I guess they really do not have any clue just how dorky these mindless comments make them look.

About a week ago I ran into three of them that were pasting their nonsense back and forth on each other's posts... and did not even seem to be aware that each of them... spammers themselves... were being spammed by someone else.

I guess that the quality of their posts is such that they themselves get so few comments... that they never even READ the few comments on their own posts... so they don't know they're being spammed.  What silliness.

Just what in the world do they get out of this ?  How silly.

By the way... really cute sock puppet.  :)

I guess we have to be self policing and call each other out on disreputable behavior like this. I hope this will continue to be a mostly positive space to come and learn.

Hi Maureen... as you know, cut and paste commenters make me insane.  If someone is going to "game" the system for points, then they should at least be smart enough to be less obvious about it!

I think this is more than just the efficient comments.  If you look at whom they all comment to you can see what it is about. It looks so fake....

This is not the first time it's been done on ActiveRain and it won't be the last.  I think AR looked the other way early on because it boosted the membership numbers.  Someone with 5 or 10 suckpuppets commenting on their post is obvious but if they turn off their My Comments it is harder to see the pattern.

Someone else pointed out the "members" are just recycling the same content over and over....

Rich welcome to ActiveRain.

Well, hell.  I just had an idea.  Instead of the standard, "Great Post, thanks for sharing" comment; I could create a library of 6 or 8 different comment templates, and match them to the content of the post.

For instance, if someone is posting about a sale they just closed, I could use the "That's Great News. Congratulations" template.

If they are posting about a deal that just fell thru, I could use the "I'm so sorry to hear that.  That Sucks" template.

:-)

And Don, I'm sure the comment you wrote on that person's blog the other evening was straight from the heart.  But there are people that go through several different posts and copy and paste the same comment over and over, just to get points.

LOL at Cheryl.

I recently heard THE biggest comment spammer on ActiveRain admonish people NOT to do it, as a welcome... that it does more harm than good.
