Highland Square Ohio Homes Have History

Why is Highland Square Ohio homes history any different than Akron Ohio's other neighborhoods? For one thing it is probably the closest large neighborhood to downtown Akron Ohio. Also, it is the home of more high rise condos and apartments than any other Akron neighborhood that makes it unique.

Highland Square Homes

Some of Akron Ohio's most prominent historic citizens have called Highland Square home. Founder of Knight-Ridder newspapers, John S Knight lived there in the '70's. I met him at Portage Country Club several times in college. (I parked his car, lol) Also, one of the founders of AA, Dr Bob lived there and his home is subject to an annual pilgrimage that gains national attention. This Highland Square home of Dr Bob is now on the National Register of Historic Homes.

Highland Square homes is also the center of the "Portage" which the Indians used to carry their canoes between the Cuyahoga River and the Tuscarawas River, about 8 miles. This was the only spot from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico that they were forced to leave water! Imagine. The main street through Highland Square homes is called, Portage Path. A statue of an Indian affectionately called "Unk", has stood at the corner of Portage Path and Market street since 1905. Another statue is in Barberton Ohio at Hopocan Ave, close to the end of their "Portage". Also, the Portage Path was part of the effective western boundary of the white and Native American lands from 1785 to 1805.

Locally, why do Highland Square homes stand out! Highland Square is strongly progressive; John Kerry's Summit County Headquarters was located in a Highland Square storefront during the 2004 election. Many members of the LGBT community have made their home here and many businesses are either gay owned or gay friendly. The commercial part of Highland Square is anchored by the historic Highland Theater, which has undergone millions in renovations. Today it is a great place to have a drink or catch one of the many concerts staged there. My wife and I saw Derek Trucks there, an awesome stage and atmosphere. The Highland Square Development Association works very hard to maintain the character of the area and has many willing volunteers.

Highland Square homes maintain a strong identity from its residents and most would never consider moving. They are highly protective of their local restaurants and night spots, all walking distance. I went to the Bucket Shop in the '70's, it is still popular today as Ray's, Mary Coyles Ice Cream, Annabelles and others enjoy a loyal following and are considered classic Highland Square by Akrons other neighborhoods. As for us non-Highland Square residents, we are always made to feel welcome when we travel the "portage" for some good food, music and camaraderie. Highland Square Ohio Rocks!

Trust me, I am your Highland Square Ohio Realtor!
