SC Safe Home Fair in Charleston August 10, 2009

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Alliance

Did you know there is grant money available to help retrofit your Charleston home against potential damages from wind and severe storms? In 2007, the Omnibus Coastal Property Insurance Reform Act established the South Carolina Safe Home Grant Program known as SC Safe Home. Grant funds are available for individual homeowners to make improvements or repairs to their homes in order to reduce the impact from high winds and hurricanes. In order to qualify for the grant, the home must be a primary residence and can not be assessed or insured for more than $300,000. Grant funds are awarded up to $5,000 and based upon your income and the value of your home. Funds can either be matching or non-matching.

SC Safe HomeIf your home meets the eligibility requirements, the first step is to have your home inspected by a Certified Wind Inspector. The inspection report will outline the steps you can take to strengthen your home against potential damages and will need to be included with your grant application. The cost of the inspection is the responsibility of the homeowner and should not exceed $150.

Once you've received the report, the next step is to contact a number of Certified Contractors to provide estimates for the work to be done. Again, this information will be included in the grant application. Types of improvements include: roof-deck attachment, secondary water barriers, roof covering, reinforcement to roof-to-wall connections, exterior and garage doors, tie downs, and problems associated with structural components. You can also request the Advisory Committee to approve other techniques.

SC Safe Home is hosting the SC Safe Home Fair Sunday, August 10 from 1-5pm, at the North Charleston Convention Center. The Fair is free to attend and provide information about the Weatherization Grants, Hurricane Preparedness, Energy Efficiency and Savings, Insurance, Tax Credits, Catastrophe Savings Accounts, and Do-It-Yourself Seminars.
