Little Eyes Are Watching

Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Public CamerasIn real estate we are ALWAYS making impressions with everyone we come in contact with. But some of the most important ones that are "watching" are the little ones, whether from our own families or children in general.

   Little Eyes Are Watching

I've always liked this version of this poem. Targeted at fathers, it could easily be about mothers, or all of us in our relation to children and the HUGE impact we have on them.

The author is Edgar Guest.

There are little eyes upon you
and they're watching night and day.

There are little ears that quickly
take in every word you say.

There are little hands all eager
to do anything you do;

And a little boy who's dreaming
of the day he'll be like you.

You're the little fellow's idol,
you're the wisest of the wise.

In his little mind about you
no suspicions ever rise.

He believes in you devoutly,
holds all you say and do;

He will say and do, in your way
when he's grown up just like you.

There's a wide-eyed little fellow
who believes you're always right;
and his eyes are always opened,
and he watches day and night.

You are setting an example
every day in all you do;

For the little boy who's waiting
to grow up to be like you.

The responsibility we carry as parents is tremendous, and many people worry about it to the nth degree.  But the best thing, just as in blogging, is just be yourself.  focus on being a good person, squared away, honest in your dealings, straight forward, and the rest will follow.  You kids will see a straight shooter, and mimic what you do, not what you say.

As usual, you are sot on.  There is a country song out now... canpt think of the name (I have counting crows blaring right now) about  a little boy who learns to swear, and pray, by watching his dad.  Dad, I been watching you, ain't that cool, I'm your  XXXXX your little buckaroo.... I wanna be just like you.  Someone else will chime  with the name and singer.

Gary - My mother had a copy of this that she showed me several times when I was growing up.  She took her role as my mom seriously.  Great stuff!

hi Gary! This poem presents such a moment of truth for the reader...and expecially for little ones, they are learning everything by imitation (so we shouldn't act like such monkeys!) Being our best every day can be a good habit...might not be perfect, but it allows us to be a best friend, best parent, best professional, etc., that we can be. Thanks for inspiring thoughts.

This poem is oh sooo true. Little ears and eyes are always watching and trying to mimic. You are setting the example whether you realize it or not!

Hi Gary I am so behind in my blog reading and commenting.  I very quickly checked out your blogs and I have a smile that just will not go away.  My little grandson called me today to tell me that the Doctor said he was going to have a baby brother.  He did want a brother.  I told  him " Aidan that is wonderful because you will be able to teach your new little brother all sorts of little boy things "   He is so excited ( 6 yrs Old )  He is such a nurturer.  Why I am telling you this is ....this poem is perfect for him...the big brother...and I cant's wait to give it to his mom..she is going to love it...thanks for sharing it

Gary, you have such a great spirit.  Edgar Guest is one of my favorite poets.  And, here you are with his verse.  Thank you.  We need to be cognizant of what impressions we are making on everyone we meet!

Gary, I love this poem, and know that it is so true.  Those little eyes see everything and form their opinions from those that are around them.

This is wonderful, Gary. I have a very old copy of a small red book of Edgar Guest poetry packed away in a box in the garage. If I knew what box it was in, I'd pull it out! I love his poems - they are very down to earth.

Hi Gary, Being an optimist, I and I am sure most of the people in our country hopes that what is seen and heard that will be absorbed like a sponge are the right things. Television is a valuable source of entertainment but sadly it also provides a major source for imitation and that is a major undoing of the best examples we set for children.

Gary, It's a wonderful poem.  I wish some parents I know would follow it...The kind that say "Do as I tell you, not what I do."

It is a daunting responsibility and sadly, there have been many times that I didn't live up to it.  When I see a bad habit of mine being mimic by one of my boys, it makes me cringe.  Cussing being one of my bad habits.   So, I say what my parents said... do as I say, and not as I do!  Great poem.

Kids are sponges. They pick up the good and bad examples we leave behind. As a parent you are ALWAYS on stage for better or worse.

Perry Biggerstaff

Hi Gary,

My name is Perry Biggerstaff and I am actully the author of the poem "There are little eyes upon you".

The poem was written when my son was 6 months old and the original is still on my refrigerator at home.  It movesme that my little poem has touched the hearts of so many people but there seems to be something inits simplisity that is universal.

Anyway...I just wanted to thank you for caring enough about it to post it on your blog and wanted to give you a the actual name of the author.

God Bless,

Perry Biggerstaff

This little poem has been a favorite of mine for over 50 years. The author is unknown; however, in my google search to find it, I have seen attribution given to 5 or 6 different people including one mother who claims to have written it after seeing her husband inflict corporal punishment on their son. The simple little poem is loaded with pure depth, and to see someone claim credit for it such as "Edgar Guest" in your blog sort of defeats the meaning of the poem, don't you think? Oxymoronic. Thanks for listening.
