Gaithersburg Announces 2009 Citizens Police Academy
The Gaithersburg Police Department is now accepting applications for its Citizens Police Academy, which begins Thursday, September 10, 2009. Weekly sessions will be held at the Robertson Park Youth Center, located at 801 Rabbitt Road, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday night through November 5. Class size is limited to 16 City of Gaithersburg residents who must be at least 16 years of age. The deadline for applications is Thursday, August 28.
The Citizens Police Academy educates participants about law enforcement techniques and practices, traffic collision investigation, patrol operations, drug enforcement, crime prevention, community policing and other topics. There will also be practical demonstrations outside the classroom.
"The program provides an excellent opportunity for positive interaction between the Police Department and the citizens of Gaithersburg," said Gaithersburg Chief of Police John King. "Academy participants are often very involved in their community. Through this program they not only learn about the dynamics of a suburban police force, they also take that knowledge back in to the community to share with co-workers, neighbors and friends, increasing awareness and understanding of issues related to public safety."
