Oil Paintings of Lamb, Whitt Exhibited at Gaithersburg City Hall Gallery
The City of Gaithersburg hosts "Bravo Cortona," an exhibit of oil paintings on panel by Jan McIntyre Lamb and "Fields and Streams," featuring oil paintings on canvas by Craig Whitt at the City Hall Gallery July 24 through September 20, 2009. The Gallery is located on the second floor of City Hall, 31 S. Summit Avenue in Olde Towne, Gaithersburg. An artists' reception will be held on Thursday, August 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
While traveling in Italy, Jan McIntyre Lamb was struck by the simple structure and shapes of the buildings clustered together in the small hill towns. She was also intrigued that each town seemed to have a color of its own. Bravo Cortona is a body of work compiled in the seven years following her trip to Cortona, Italy. Lamb likes to think that she is referencing some of the history that surrounds every aspect of Italian life, as well as her own reverence for a culture that always retains its past. Although she considers herself an oil painter first, Lamb has studied ceramics, watercolor, figure drawing, and printmaking, with each medium adding something meaningful to her painting. Lamb works in a studio in Libertytown, MD and teaches at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in Frederick. She is also a member of The Artists' Gallery in Frederick.
Craig Whitt has lived in Maryland for 56 years, spending the last 18 of them in Montgomery Village. Encouraged to draw at a young age by his mother, Whitt took drawing lessons from a neighbor who was also a sculptor. This and high school art classes remain his only formal training. Whitt began painting in oils in his late teens, and it remains his favorite medium. He paints in the "impressionistic manner," inspired by Winslow Homer, Frank Benson, Childe Hassam and other turn-of-the-century artists. Whitt paints landscapes of local scenes and wildlife and his love for nature and a passion for fly-fishing can be seen in the works in this exhibit. A member of the Olney Art Association (OAA), Whitt served as its Vice President from 2001 to 2005 and he has received two OAA Grumbacher Awards for Best Oil Painting in the Association's annual juried shows.
