Is Google Rank Dropping? Remove some Keywords.

If you woke up a few weeks ago, or a few months ago scratching your head, why is my Google website rank dropping?

You're not alone.

Google SEO optimization calls for a keyword density allowance of 2% - 5% of the total words on one page. The rule of thumb here is to drag everything into MS Word and do a word count. Count up the number of key word phrases such as, "Dallas Real Estate, or "Dallas Homes for Sale," etc.

Then if the usage of these key words is MORE than 6%, then you need to ADD more copy, or reduce the number of times you insert these key phrases.

Key Word Spamming is one of the reasons why many websites are being dragged down. The 2nd reason is that "Alice the Agent, or "Bob the Broker of Amazing Realty," might have hired a genuine SEO Rockstar. If that happened and you aren't adding more page content to your site... then your competitors are just driving away and leaving you in the dust.

Google's visit to your site showed in April 2009 your keyword balance was correct, but because you were showing on page one, position #6, you think to yourself:  Just pour some more key words on your home page... and your ranking will go UP.

This is fine, but if you don't know the Google Rule of Three, this can have the opposite effect.

If you add too many key words, Google sees this on their next visit and can and most probably will drop you a bit.

Less is More

You don't have a sport a long, scrolling web page that's fifteen stories long to land a page one rank on Google. You just need to be smart. Count up the key phrases on your competitor's website and then add one or two MORE of the SAME phrases to your home page, or contact page, or IDX or some other landing page.

Below is my Saturday Exercise to Getting Visible on Google, just by practicing this exercise below over a few Saturdays per month. This technique works and HAS worked for me and my clients for six years. It's A White Hat SEO technique.

Step One.

Google your website. When you find your website on Google CLICK the CACHED version. See the YELLOW, BLUE and GREEN hi-lited keywords for your site? Good. Set your website printed page aside for now.

Step Two

Take some Duralene or other tracing paper and now, go to your competitor's search results. Also click on CACHED. See the colored words? Good. Print that page on the tracing paper.

Step Three

Place your competitor's website tracing paper over yours. Walk to the Window and hold it up to the light. CIRCLE the TOP THREE PHRASES on the HIGHEST position on the tracing paper.

Step Four

On your Website page, MOVE your key phrases... the SAME ones on your tracing paper... and make yours a tad bit HIGHER. Google looks for position and keyword values at the same time. Pick three phrases only and move them. DO NOT MOVE MORE THAN THREE TODAY.

Step Five

Post the new page. Then go to ActiveRain.com and make a post about a piece of YOUR TOWN real estate. If you are in Colorado Springs, do this. Write a sentence about Homes for Sale in Colorado Springs. See the bold and the link to www.ColoradoSpringsTeam.com?  Do THAT same thing on your website.

More good stuff SEO How to coming later. It's 9:23 pm and time to call it a day.

I had heard about this several months ago from my webmaster, but until now I hadn't read about it on AR. I think this is just another reason to respect Google. Thanks for the pointers Bart.

Thanks for the information.  I'm not sure what's been happening with my website but this might help explain it.  I've gone from 9th to 120th (might as well not exist) for "Manhattan Beach real estate" keyword, but have stayed high for "Manhattan Beach home" and couldn't figure out why.  As you mentioned I just kept increasing the frequency of these keyword pharases so now I've reversed course and we'll see what happens.   Appreciate the insight.

Hi Keith,

What's your Website URL (domain) this is happening to? Let me know and I will take a look at it, compare it to others in your market, then give you a simple four step plan to fix your dropping rank.
