What do you call the strip of grass between the house and the street?

In Akron, Ohio, where I grew up, we called it the devilstrip. I always thought that's what everyone called it, but when I use that term in Columbus, I get the strangest looks. So, I googled and found out that, indeed, it's linguistically unique to northeast Ohio, and Akron in particular.

>According to The Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE), which pays close attention to such local lingo, "devil strip" is heard almost exclusively in Northeastern Ohio, up around Akron. DARE suggests that the term may arise from the strip's legal status as a sort of "no man's land" between public and private property.<

Who knew?

What do you call it in your part of the country?

I have always thought of it as "easement" it belongs to the Homeowner but the City has rights to it. The homeowner is responsible for upkeep, like grass mowing but can't plant anything on it. (usually).

We have always called it an easement in Texas. It belongs to the city, but the home owner is usually responsible for mowing it. You can see on mostsurveys that the land beyond the survey boundary is marked as an easement.

I'm hereby adopting devilstrip - love fun new terminology to use in my lingo! And was just talking about this the other day!

Karen,  I have seen signs that said.. NO Parking on the ROW.  I wondered what that meant then found out if meant, RIGHT OF WAY.  near that strip of grass.

Karen, I love learning new expressions like this. We don't seem to have an equivalent.

Hi Karen,

Just like Janice, I don't believe we have an equivalent either. That area of grass seems just seems to be lost in translation and up for interpretation. LOL All the best!

:)

Karen: I grew up in nearby Cleveland.  I never heard of the term "devil's strip."  There must have been many more devils in Akron than in Cleveland is my guess.  Honestly, I have always heard that strip between the sidewalk and the street... called the "tree lawn."  That strip, and the sidewalk, both belonged to the city, but were to be maintained by the homeowner.

I've never heard of devilstrip but I like it. All that really matters, is that someone else has to do the upkeep on it.
