Broker Bryant is Full of Hot Air!!!

Broker Bryant is full of hot airHi folks.  The topic of this post is comments. Not how to make them or when to respond to them but how much value they can add to a post if you give them time to germinate.

When I write a post one of my goals is to create a discussion. I do this by asking questions, writing about a topic but leaving out information or by writing about something controversial. The reason I do this is because I want to learn. The discussions that take place in the comments help me do this. The comments give me a different way of looking at things or maybe I get some additional information that I didn't know or hadn't thought of.

Sometimes, my entire way of looking at a topic may change. I may have just been dead wrong in my thinking and some one was able to correct me. Either way it stimulates my thought process. And that's my main objective for writing.

So folks, what I want to do today is share some links to a few of my older posts. The posts that I have chosen are posts that generated tremendous discussion or had people commenting that were very aggressive and I was able to turn them around. And a few where we just had to agree to disagree and move forward.

My point in sharing these past posts is to show you how a comment thread can evolve from being very negative or aggressive to ending in a very positive manner.

If you receive a comment you don't like or you feel is an attack don't be so quick to delete it. Think about it. Then try to change that person's way of thinking. Debate the topic. Try your best to turn them around. Who knows......you may be the one that's wrong or maybe you'll learn something.

If you have a strong opinion on something you should be able to defend it. If all you want is for people to agree with you then you are missing out on a great opportunity to grow. Remember opinions are NEVER right or wrong. They are just opinions.

So, if you want to see how commenting can expand your knowledge, then take some time and read through these posts. It won't be easy. Some of these have many, many comments and each comment could be a post of it's own. Also, the comments are much better than the posts. The posts were just a starting point.

You'll read heated battles, total disagreements, anonymous posters, consumers weighing in and several other surprises. Who knows maybe you'll learn something. OK so here goes. I hope you enjoy the read. Might take a week to get through it all but it will be worth it I promise. Then come back and let me know what you think.

  • Let the Games Begin! This was a very strong debate between several members with me basically moderating the battle.
  • So, what do you do to justify your high commission? Folks, if you don't read any of the others, you need to read this one. This post is an AR classic on how to debate a topic. To get the full affect of how this came about you have to visit the first link in the post that will take you over to the bloodhound blog. I was very, very proud of the members of ActiveRain this day. To me this comment thread epitomizes what blogging is all about.
  • Compensation or Performance? Which one will it be? Another great comment thread. REALTORS®, the consumer and an Attorney debate this topic. You have to get about half way down to when Mark Nadel, the person who wrote a 75 page white paper study on this topic, chimed in.

OK that's it. I hope that in some small way this post will help you. As always, I appreciate each and every one of you that take the time to read what I write. Don't ever feel you have to agree with me. I'm a big boy and I can take it. I want to know your opinions and thoughts. So let me have them!

Hun...

Sorry it took me so long to get here I was reading "So What Do You To Justify Your High Commission". Out of all the discussions on these blog posts, that one was my favorite. Talk about turning someone around :)

BB, I know you are talking about your posts that have gotten the most comments but you have got to put a link to TLW's  RECIPROCITY  blogs. They must have about a million comments by now.

Great ideas on comments.  This is my question: what happened with your "range pricing"? Was it deemed legal?  Here in CA we actually are allowed to enter a range on our MLS.  Maybe this is due to you guys.  If so, thanks!

Hi BB,

I recently wrote a post on taking an overpriced listing or not. The conversation was incredible, and I did just as you do. I asked a lot of questions, asking for others opinions in an open minded environment. It was great, and I took the idea from you. So, thanks! :)

That's ALOT of reading homework, BB.

But back to your comment, I totally agree with you about how a comment can change and shape your opinion. Many blog comments have done that to me. That's the whole reason we have a healthy discussion.

I do and have deleted 2 comments in my entire time on AR. That's because those comments were not to discuss the poiints of the post, but instead it is use to air my work out to the public - which I feel is entirely mine and private and not necessary.

Another comment which was deleted by the author himself (and in so many ways I'm glad he did) was when he attacked my inteligence and how I didn't fit to make comments on commercial development. As I had mentioned in my post that the opinion was entirely mine and I think I am allowed to share my opinions. Feel free to disagree, but when someone talks about not fit being the realtor in town and how I'm just doing it for Google Juice, I'm glad he kicked his own behind.

I don't feel that people need to agree with me, but I think any comments should be respectful, whether they agree with me or not.  I'm a big girl, and I know I'm usually right, so it really doesn't matter to me if people agree with me! :-)  As long as TLW agrees with me, all is right in my world!

Hi Linda, Of course it's legal. The legality of it was never an issue, The issue was the MLS system tryinmg to dictate how we enter info and doing their best to make it so range pricing wouldn't work. I haven't used it in quite awhile due to the market changing. Since most of my listing are now short sales pricing is no longer an issure because I can go as low as needed to get the property under contract. I am still a HUGE fan of range pricing though.

TLW, Candybags started a great discussion!!!

Way to go Lisa!!!! There are a lot of smart people on AR. Picking their brains has helped take my business to the next level.

Thanks Margaret. These aren't the MOST commented just the best comment streams.

Rick. It may take you a few days to read through the comments on those posts. They're awesome though so if you have the time go for it.

Loreena, Your opinion is always welcomed here :)

Susan, I disagree. Or not. TLW bought me  teeshirt that read "You can either agree with me or be wrong". Then SHE put it on!!!!

No doubt - it is both very educational and flattering to receive comments. And those blogs that get a true conversation going (versus more stagnant comments) are hands down the best

If you have a strong opinion on something you should be able to defend it.  I couldn't agree more... and I'm not so thick-headed as to not be able to see another side of an issue.  Stepping back and looking at 'it' from another angle might just open your eyes.  Good stuff, BB.

BB - I think, no I read all of your posts you listed above and TLW is right about justifying our commission was by far the most interesting post I read, especially the comments which kept me up most of the night :) - If there is a "Hall of Fame" blog, this one must be included.

Everyone is entitled in their opinions as long as they can back it up with facts. Sometimes, when I read a comment that is not quite what I was expecting, I take a step back and look at the other side. We are here to learn from each other, not to cut each others throat when we disagree.

BB, I am going to be late for work if I read any more! CB certainly started quite a discussion with his comments in bloodhound. I have not finished reading, but just wanted to note that because the tone of your post was so different, CB changed his tone.

No need to bash. I have had one person who was so angry with me for something, we went to emails, and he apologized. I could have been the one that was wrong, and I hope that I will be big enough to admit it. Very important thing.

Great thought provoking post. I will go back and read as I can the others. Thank you!

Petra...

Sorry about that. You should know we spent an entire weekend conversing with Mr Candy Bags. Turns out he had a lot to say and all he really wanted was someone to listen to him.

Susan...

Google the phrase and grab yourself one of those shirts. By the way, I was wrong, once :)

I try not to get involved in controversies of any sort. I just find them too tiring and think life is just too short to get involved in them. I even get tired of reading about them or hearing about them -- Michael Jackson right now is a good case in point.

Bryant- I so agree to disagree:) I love it when I disagree with you or Lenn because you are both so mature and able to handle it. I have people who delete my disagreeing! What can you learn from that? I am open minded about most things. Even if I have my mind made up, I still hear the other side, like that I believe in God. No one will ever change that for me, but I will still listen to someone who does not believe in God and listen to why and all that. I am not going to delete them from my blog or my life over that. Lively debates keep our blood boiling and rolling! Debating is healthy too. Can you just imagine how boring life would be if we all agreed with one another! Katerina

HiI BB - I almost always read every single comment as well as the posts, becaue different professionals have different perspectives on a situation.  Sometimes we get frustrated about the way a certain thing is done, but once we learn why it is that way by hearing from another "party" to the transaction, it will make sense.

And of course rules are very different in different part of the country, so I notice that some people argue about things that are simply local issues.  I always feel that I'm learning by reading all sides, and I wish people would calm down a bit with the occasional attacks that appear in posts and comments.

As for being right or wrong, my dad had a sign that said "Rule 1:  Harry is never wrong.  Rule 2:  If Harry is wrong, see Rule 1."
