Recently I read a very profound BLOG post by Gary Woltal in which he asks the question ‘Who are the people you would call in the middle of the night?' After reading this I started thinking about those people, I made a list and it continued to grow throughout the week. I was comforted by the number of people on my list, people that I know would take the call, would lose sleep to help me in a time of need. I have been blessed with wonderful friends and I great church family that I know would answer my call.
After a while I started thinking about people in our community that do not have that person to call, people that do not have someone checking on them, someone ready with a kind word in their time of need. How many of my neighbors, church members, and peers go home to a lonely place with little to no human interaction?
My family and I attended a church small group on Sunday evenings. It is one of the highlights of my weekend. It is a time for fun, fellowship and supporting one another. We laugh together, debate one another, pray with and cry for each other. The people in our group have become very much our family.
On Sunday evening, during our small group, as God often does, He brought the message of the evening full circle with my thoughts of the week. Our study was on affirming, accepting and appreciating others. It went on to point out that as a church body it is important to realize that there are probably people in your church, with whom the only affirmation they receive is at church. After the lesson we were given a homework assignment to write a note that ‘affirms, accepts, and appreciates' to a randomly drawn member of our life group. This got me thinking, maybe I should do this for all my ‘in the middle of the night people.' Then I started thinking maybe I should reach out to someone at church who is alone in this world. By the time I finished I had written 15 notes, but it was so much fun. Next weekend I just might mow a neighbor's lawn.
Thank-you Gary for your great post, and for inspiring me.
If each of us would make the effort everyday to make someone else's day better, what a great world this could be. May your day be blessed.
