More Historic Homes in Bellingham

By
Home Inspector with Helm Home Inspections

This is a continuation of my blog on Bellingham, Washington historic homes.  Most of these are in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Bellingham.  The neighborhood is very desirable, and has seen major appreciation in values over the last several years.

Washington Home 1908                                      Pettibone Home 1886

McTaggart Home 1898                                      Shields Home 1901

Canfield Home 1892                                   Kellogg Home 1900

Again, as before, you can see that all these beautiful homes have been well maintained and have retained there original character.

I would love to live in an old home like that.  As a kid, I remember occasional visits to a great aunt's home in Arkansas.  She lived in home like that, and the place felt magical to me.

Unfortunately, as an home inspector, I usually only get to explore these old homes after they have endured many decades of abuse and neglect.

Danny, you are right.  That is one of the joys in this beautiful part of the world.  This little town (not so little anymore, 80 to 90 thousand) is one of the most well kept towns I've ever been in. . .and it has many older and newer discreet neighborhoods.

David, I know what you mean, although there are very few of these magnificent ladies in disrepair.  People here who own them take great pride in keeping them up, and see it as a responsibility and a privilege.  My own home is 84 years old, not historic in any sense, but completely rebuilt and upgraded by me.  My home celebrates the legacy of local lumber.  All the trim, though new, is clear vertical grain Douglas Fir and my counter tops are the local Western Big Leaf Maple with live edge on the seating side.  If you saw my coffe table on my blog, it is this same wood. I drove by most, to all, of those houses every week. Some are close to my neighborhood.

Gene, I've lived here for thirty five years (as an adult).  You might say that I like it here.  Thanks for stopping by.

Steven, we both drive by these places regularly.  It's part of the enjoyment of this town.

Thanks for sharing the photos of these magnificient homes.  What a beautiful area.

David I admire the craftsmanship of these beauties as my father was in construction and created beautiful finish work.  One of his favorites was to work with various types of burl.  Maple, walnut and redwood were the ones he used most.

Thanks Linda.  I too, like working with beautiful woods.  I carve with red alder, red cedar and yellow cedar.  Much of the rest of what I do is with northwest big leaf maple (great figure) and douglas fir (clear, vertical grain, one of the most beautiful of woods in my opinion).B
