How safe are your electrical outlets?

If you live in an older home built prior to 1980 you may not have GFCI, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, grounded outlets in the kitchen, bathrooms, garage and exterior. It is normal for all bathrooms to be on the same cicuit with one GFCI outlet. In the 80's it was common for the bath outlets to be protected on the garage GFCI circuit. Home's built before 1960 will have ungrounded outlets, 2 slots rather than 3, like todays. These can be a shock hazard and replacing them with GFCI outlets would be advisable in the areas mentioned. Because these outlets can fail or be improperly installed you should occasionally "test". With a lamp in the outlet push the test button: the lamp should go out, if not call an electrician.
