Landlords Nightmare - Tenant Leaves Tens of Thousands of Empty Beer Cans in Townhouse!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with M & M Realty of Brevard Inc. BK629999

Landlords nightmare

A single guy lived in this townhouse for 8 years in Utah. The landlord thought he was a perfect tenant because he never called or complained.

Landlords nightmare

These pictures don't do the townhome justice, as the real estate company had already started moving some of the cans out of the property.

Landlords nightmare

The tenant had tunnels that he made to get to the kitchen, the bedroom and the bathroom.

Landlords nightmare

Other than having a minor drinking problem, the tenant paid his rent every month on time.

Landlords nightmare

The water and heat were off.

It was estimated that there were 70,000 beer cans in the townhouse. That means the tenant had to drink 24 cans of beer everyday for the 8 years he lived there.

And, he only drank light beer.

This was sent to me by a friend in an email today.

Good GRIEF!!!  I just couldn't help but laugh at the "tunnels to get to the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen."  Priorities, huh??  Just goes to show you, it's the quiet ones you've got to check on!

Lots of bad tenant stories lately! LOL.  I liked you phrasing it as a "slight" drinking problem!

Hi Sandy

Drinking 14 cans a beer would leave very little time to clean up and he  didn't realize there were beer cans in the house.

Good luck and success.

Sandy, That's frightening.  I hate to think how the place smelled or the fact that he was so drunk he could have started a fire.  I wonder if you have a right, as an owner, to check your tenant's spaces on occasion?

I have had many trash outs on my REO listings but never anything filled with beer cans. My trash out crew would have loved this one as they would get paid to clean it out and would have sold the cans. No dump fees to pay.

Sandy - Last night I watched the movie, "Grey Gardens."  It is about an eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, who lived in the Hamptons.  They let their once magnificent home go in to disrepair and outright squaler.  If you have an opportunity to watch it, I think you might enjoy it.  Drew Barrymore is in it.

Are you serious?  That can't be real?  <Picking jaw up off the floor>  Now what in the world makes people do things like this?  I would love to know his reasoning for just throwing all of his cans on the floor?  Is that why he moved...he ran out of room to throw more cans?  :)

As I was driving today and the person in front of me kept flicking their ashes out onto my car and then decides to discard his cigarette while driving down the road I was just wondering "What the heck are these people thinking by throwing their trash in the middle of the street?  How much effort does it take to put it in the ashtray and empty it in a trash can?"  Now I guess my concerns about this guy's stupid cigarette are nothing compared to my concerns for this guy and his drinking and littering problem...

I'm speechless...well, almost! I have heard of people who have a hoarding disorder... but I don't get hoarding just the beer cans --that's just unbelievable. Did he vacate in order to receive his liver transplant?

Wow I don't know what to say after looking at those pictures.  I wonder how much one could get to recycle those cans?

This is Priceless!  Were these "returnables"?  If so, the landlord has a fortune on his hands.

Renae, Great point! It's never a good sign when the tenant never ever calls for any maintenance issues. But laughingly, I don't know how the tenant would even have known if he had any maintenance issues!

Sheree, We hear all kinds of stories, however I have never seen anything like this before (thank goodness).

Alexsandra, I would have liked to see those tunnels. I'm with you, how did they keep from collapsing?

Konnie, Funny, you never really know what you're going to find, do you?

Lou, That much beer each day would leave little time to be able to think about anything.  I wonder how he remembered to pay his rent on time each month?

Li, It's amazing the circumstances in which some people live.

Carole, Another great point! It could be concern for a fire - that's true.  Each lease should have a clause that indicates how often an owner can go inside and do inspections on a property.

Cameron, I wonder how much money was here in scrapping those cans.  So true!

Myrl, I haven't heard of this movie before, but I will check it out.  Sounds like a good one.

Chanda, I think that sometimes people just do what they do, and don't give it a second thought.  I think a lot of times there really is no rhyme nor reason to any of it, don't you?

Hi Paul, Agreed.  Cameron mentioned that his workers would love scrapping these cans for cash. My daughters would love scrapping them for cash.  (I don't know if they could stand the beer smell.)

Mike, I think that someone is going to pick up some cash off those cans.

Robert, I love your comment - I don't think I could do that for 8 MINUTES!

Hey Miss Mary, You always make me chuckle. Too funny! Love it!  I was wondering how sick this guy must have been, also.  His body must have been a mess!

Richard, We were wondering the same thing - probably a pretty nice chunk of change.

Pat, It is amazing how some people live (or don't live).  I can't believe this could be called living.

Tom, So true, lots of money in those cans if they can be recycled.
