New York, here we come!

The year was 1968 and we were planning a trip to New York, not the city but Ithaca. I had an aunt, uncle and two cousins living there and we were going to visit. Having never been to New York I was extremely excited to see what the east coast looked like. Unfortunately just a few days before we were to leave a neighbor friend passed away. That put us a day behind the time we going to leave, so we decided to drive the entire way nonstop, what were we thinking.

The day to leave came we left in the middle of the afternoon after the funeral, with three drivers we thought we could pull this off. My dad started the first leg of the trip, my brother and I waited for our turns to take the wheel. My oldest brother was 17 and I was 15 with only a learners permit, what a great time to learn, my youngest brother was 10 or 11 so he couldn't drive, well he could have, we lived on a farm so everybody drove as soon as they could ride a bike.

We had a huge Oldsmobile with plenty of room for the five of us, only when my youngest brother thought it was time to go to sleep he had to lay on the entire back seat so three in the front an one and a half in the back.

We stopped to eat and get gas other than that we were hell bent for New York. The night was the longest an hardest to stay awake so we took turns with the catnaps. Twenty four hours later we arrived at our destination, dog tired. It took us a day to revive, then the fun started we toured and saw the sights. We spent about a week enjoying New York and our relatives, when it came time to return home we decided we didn't have to get home in such a big hurry, and took our time. Another one of those memories that just popped up.

Glad you made it.  I hope you got to see our beautiful ocean coastline.  And of course New York Harbor.
