Control Your Computer Updates AND DO THEM!

By
Title Insurance ePro, MBA

I was working with a Real Estate Professional the other day and noticed that they were still using Internet Explorer 6.0 on their Windows XP PC.  Everything was working but they were missing out on the increased functionality of the browsers that are out there.

How do you know what version?  Open your browser and click on Help and then Click on About and you will see your version of most programs.

The point is == they hadn't updated their computer lately and their system was NOT set to automatically update itself.  Most systems out of the box are configured to automatically update itself.  How do you know if yours is on?  Right click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties".  Click on the "Automatic Updates" tab that you find in the control panel for Auto updates.

You can choose to download and notify you or notify that they are available for you then to download and update.

It's nice to have control but MAKE sure you are at least doing some type of updates.

Back to the original story -- the Real Estate Professional had their Automatic Update turned off -- meaning they were not even getting the Windows updates and security patches that always seem to appear regularly.

Do yourself a favor -- run windows update and see if you have any critical update.  Windows XP - click on start, click on All Programs and Click on Windows Update -- answer the questions and run the critical updates.  Other updates might be available for your hardware and you can determine if you want to update your system.  I am of the mind -- if it isn't broke -- don't try to fiix it.

Hi Scott, without auto upedates I'd probably be like your friend. Thanks for the suggestions.
