How Is the Economy Affecting the Homestaging Industry

By
Home Stager with Hendrix Interior Design and Staging

In the last several months, I have experienced a severe slowdown in homestaging and redesign job opportunities. I had one

potential client ask if I would deliver my furniture and accessories and allow her to stage her home and then pay me a monthly rental fee. As

I am not in the furniture rental business, I felt I had to say no...

Have any of you experienced anything like this? Have you thought about redefining your staging business to include things such as renting furniture??

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reach out to sellers, realtors, etc., to make homestaging a more viable and economical option?? My prices

are quite reasonable, and I have even received payment through escrow after closing...

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sharon,  I have just started offering my furniture (limited) artwork and accessories to others wanting to stage.  No takers, as of yet, but I figure why not make some money off of my inventory during this slowdown.  When I blogged about it many stagers said that I would be taking business away from myself, but in my market I truly believe that those who rent my items would not have used me anyway.  My only stipulation is that I do not rent my items to occupieds where I don't know the owners.

You are brave to wait and take payment at close of escrow.  What do you do to assure that you get paid?

Isn't the furniture and decor for rent when you stage?  If yes, then why not rent it out if she wants to do the staging herself?  She is likely going to end up needing your help at some point and you have your foot in the door.

Sharon, Stagers have many different opinions on this topic.  I think you did the right thing if you felt like saying no.  There is probably a good reason why you got that feeling.  If you felt like it would have been beneficial for you then I think it would be ok.  Different things work in different markets.

Are you doing any realtor presenations and/or marketing? Even though things are slow you have to keep stay out there and keeping getting your name out there so that people will remember you.

BTW, I was just in Vegas, I'll have to let you know the next time I come out there so we can meet.

Market to the investors now... they are the ones that need the staging and can pay for it. Best to you.
