What business are you in?

By
Education & Training with the Positive MOM

Last January, I heard Scott Bedbury’s talk about his vision in creating the Starbucks brand:  “We are not in the coffee business serving people; we’re in the people business serving coffee”.

Providing a unique experience through your brandI am a firm believer that if you create an experience around your charisma, personality and unique capabilities, you will be successful in any business, any market and any economy.

I always encourage my customers to brand themselves in a way that no matter what they decide to do (a.k.a. being in a brokerage firm vs. the other vs. opening their own), their customers will follow.  It’s called being in the people business!

What business are you in?

Are you in the business of a pleasant sensory experience? (If your office looks messy, your car smells ‘weird’, the restaurant you take them to lunch serves horrible food, or you say something inappropriate – according to their judgment anyway – the experience you provide could be at stake).

Are you in the business of delivering excellence? If you promise quality, you simply have to deliver quality.  Realtors take great pride in customers who buy “sight unseen”.  When a customer trusts you to that extent, you know you’re doing something.  Yes, YOU, it all comes down to you!

Are you in the business of improving yourself?  Denial is a capital branding sin.  No brand is perfect!  However, those who are successful know to capitalize on their strengths and find the opportunity on their weaknesses.  Reinvent yourself constantly, learn, improve your strategy, and be consistent in what you’re doing well!

Are you in the business of providing benefits?  Let’s say you’re selling a house and the main features are “spacious bedrooms, prestigious neighborhood and competitive price”.  What are the benefits?  Could they be comfort, safety, status?  Could it be that you’re saving them money through your unique ability to spot deals? Or most importantly, would this mean that one of their kids is finally getting their own room?  Acknowledging the real benefits will show you listen and you care! It’s the old “I don’t care how much you know until I know how much you care!”

What unique experience comes with your product or service?  I can’t wait to find out!

heard the CEO of Zappos at Inman news talking about the same thing and how to brand your business around the experience and the mission statement. We can learn much from outside of real estate and sometimes that is a better way to learn.

Elayna, your post was very thought provoking.  It does take educating yourself to learn how not to be a regular run of the mill Realtor.

Xerox...only one copy machine company amongst hundreds.  But when you make copies you "xerox" them.  My lofty goal in my region is when you think real estate you'll say David Montgomery.

I like how you have raised the question "What business are you in?".  Successful retail businesses understand this powerful marketing concept.  For ex:

  • Perfume companies sell fantasy and excitement - not perfume.
  • Starbucks sells a way of life, an attitude - not coffee.
  • MacDonalds sells fast, inexpensive and exceptional service - not hamburgers.

Thanks for helping us to focus on what our businesses are really selling.  That focus is critical to our success no matter what business we are in.

BE Positive and You'll BE Powerful!

Gynell: my pleasure! Glad to help!

Brian: Attractive is a great word for marketing!  It does not mean "pretty" or "appealing". That is very true.

Debe: Yes!  It all starts with that assessment. If it's honest, you got tools to work with! Thank you for stopping by, beautiful woman!

Sheldon: oh I don't ever stop being a geek!  I'm always looking for new information and learning, learning, learning.

Thank you, Rita, and come back.

Hey Greg boy!  Thank you!!!

C baby - thank you for the feature. You're the best!

Fernando - You're right "doing everything on your power"...we're not God, but at least we will have peace of mind knowing we did all we could.

Michael and Darrel - Yes, I agree...any individual that represents a company or a profession and meets a customer voice to face, face to face or online directly IS in the ppl business

Bob - Marketing is correct. It's not your home to sell, it's your home to market. That is why you get a commission LOL

Joe - I agree, your efforts should be put on marketing and branding as a whole and then apply it to your profession.

Lynn- Please subscribe and come back any time! I'll have more :)

Erica - Those are so boring! People avoid them and bad mouth them- just being on AR makes you not one of them, but yes, refining every day is key.

Paul - Oh yeah, that is the magic question!  The answer will reveal those weaknesses and strengths.

Deborah-  Yes :) being regular only sells if you're coffee at Starbucks LOL Decaf may disagree LOL

David - EXACTLY...that is the ultimate goal.

Charles - Lol yeah that is your profession. Your business is earning that commission :)

Marcia - Luxury properties are quite nice! Keep up the good work. I hope you'll be selling one to me in the near future :)

Dan, my friend, did you ever get that link?  You are right...this is crucial no matter what kind of business, product or service.

Thank you AAA Stripe Pro and Connective Realty for sharing!
