To minimize damage until help arrives

  • Shut off the water source if possible
  • Remove as much water as possible by blotting or mopping
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs
  • Remove oriental or other colored rugs from wet carpeting
  • Turn on air conditioner for maximum drying in summer
  • Do not use household vacuum to remove water
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of areas where ceilings are sagging from retained water
  • Don't use TV's or other household appliances while standing on wet carpeting or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors
  • Don't leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpeting
  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place
