Will you be my bff?

The foundation to social marketing is this - social networking is all about making friends.

Facebook calls your friends "friends" but other networks use different terms like associates, connections or followers. No matter the name they all enjoy the same basic relationship to you.

Most social networks limit your ability to communicate with strangers. If you want open communication with another member of a network you need to convert that stranger into a friend.

So step one to growing your social network is to convert strangers into friends.

The obvious question is how do you convert a stranger into a friend. It's not that difficult - all you need to do is send an invitation to a stranger and ask to be friends (also known as a friend request).

The most important thing about a friend is that it creates a direct relationship between you and your friend. The social networks recognize this relationship and effectively open all the communication channels for you to pass information to your friend. This means that you can freely communicate with your friend within the social networks internal communication structure.

You don't have this open line of communication with a stranger.

So step one of your social networking strategy is to convert strangers into friends.
