Capt William Clark Bronze Statue at the Univesity of Portland

On the Bluff at the University of Portland on April 2 1806, Capt. William Clark of Lewis and Clark with and Un-named Indian Guide and York Capt. Clarks Black Slave who he later freed. This Depiction is typical of Portlanders Can't we all just get a long?

Neither did I. The historical fact is written on the Bronze plaque just below the statues at The University of Portland.

That Clark freed his slave York is disputable. In Clark's letters to his brother after the expedition, Clark claims to have offered York his freedom, but York decided ultimately he didn't want it. Why York wouldn't want his freedom, after a very tumultuous relationship with Clark post-expedition, is neither logical nor reasonable.
