As a resident of Santee for over 19 years now, I must share the "staycation"getaway we have loved for years! Just a hop, skip and jump away from Towne Center, located just off of Mast Boulevard and Fanita Parkway is a vacation get away in our own back yard!

Spanning 7 lakes long and covering 190 acres, Santee Lakes has something for everyone! With each lake using reclaimed water, Padre Dam has gone green in more ways than one! Surrounded by plush green landscaping, and miles of walking/biking trails, the preserve of Santee Lakes is home to over 175 species of birds. From the Wood Ducks that breed at the Lakes to the rare Downy Woodpecker, you can't help but take up bird watching! Click here for the list of birds to be on the look out for when visiting!

Ok, so birdwatching isn't your speed? How about fishing? Each of Santee's 7 lakes are stocked with fish; Bluegill, Rainbow Trout, Large-mouth Bass and Catfish will keep your pole busy! You will never need a fishing license to fish at Santee Lakes, they offer day passes for kids and adults. During the year they will have tag fishing contests for prizes. The kids love trying to catch the tagged fish to win anything from cash to fishing poles to food prizes! What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Santee Lakesis also the perfect location for a family reunion, company picnic or school field trip. The park has it's own island, an amphitheater and a lakeside gazebo! Some great photo ops are at Santee Lakes, from your wedding day to your business card, the scenery is like you are always on vacation. Look at the great profile picture to the right! Taken at Santee Lakes!

With  paddle boats, canoes, row boats and kayaks, everyone can spend time on the water. Playgrounds are spread around the 190 acre property one of which is a sprayground! Those HOT Santee days are in need of a good sprayground! Using potable water which is treated, filtered and re-circulated like a swimming pool, we can thank the Lakes for their environmentally friendly water works!

Summer Friday nights at Santee Lakes are home to "movie night". Bring a blanket, some snacks and at dark enjoy the great family movies under the stars. Some of the movies this summer have been Kung Fu Panda, Hotel for Dogs and Bolt. To top it off, the movie is FREE! Just pay for parking and you and your car full of family and friends are enjoying another great event at the Lakes!

If all that is not enough to catch your attention, perhaps the 300 full hook up camp sites will help you enjoy a "staycation". Offering swimming pools, laundry, a general store and free Internet access, the camping experience in our own backyard is like being in the Sierra's only minutes from home. Reservations can be made online, there are 7 different loops to chose from with Lakeshore Loop providing some beautiful lakeside camp sites that allow night fishing and campfires!

Welcome to your new home away from home. Check out Santee Lakes today!

Dare I say that after 16½ years here in San Diego, I have not taken advantage of all that Santee Lakes has to offer. However, since I joined ActiveRain in July 2008, I've been exploring San Diego County, and Santee Lakes is up there on my list.
