LOUDOUN COUNTY VA FARMS.  BUFFALO AT HOME ON THE RANGE.

Living in Western Loudoun County Virginia is always an adventure.  Driving through the Western Loudoun County countryside is an adventure.  There are frequent sightings of the native Deer, Turkey, Buzzard, Hawk, Groundhog, Fox, Turtle, Snake, Rabbit, Squirrel. . . . .

From time to time, I'm surprised by something different and new.  This week while driving a back road from Lovettsville to Hillsboro (Purcellville) to my gunsmith's shop, I spotted a small heard of Buffalo in a field.  Yes, Buffalo.  These are not the huge Buffalo I've seen in Yellowstone Park, but they are Buffalo.

A bit of research later, I find that there are other Buffalo herds in Loudoun County and, from time to time, they stray.  Since these magnificent animals are quite large, when compared to Beef Cattle, caution should be the rule if they are spotted on the loose.  They can be up to 2,500 pounds.  That's a lot of Buffalo meat.

Well Lenn, I had no idea there were any Buffalo this far east.  I hope you weren't tempted to go hunting as you were at the gunsmiths.

Gabe.  HA!  No, no urge to become a Buffalo hunter.  I limit my targets to clay pigeons these days.

No Buffalo in Florida. Okay, Disney's Animal Kingdom might have some but that's about it. I do enjoy seeing our regular beef cattle though. We drove through the Central Florida countryside yesterday to take a couple of pictures and saw a whole bunch of cows. Smart animals! The one's that were laying underneath shade trees were standing in the ponds!

Andrea and Darrin.  There are few locations across the country where we will not see beef cattle.

Lenn - are these domestic herds? Are they raised for meat? Buffalo is one of the healthiest meat choices. There is just a bit of trepidation when you are in a car and a buffalo comes right up next to you and looks in the window.

Mike.  Sorry, I didn't ask them if they are a domestic herd.  Since the field they were in is fenced, I'm assuming that they are domestic.  Who knows?  They may be pets.  They are significantly smaller than the enormous Buffalo that we saw in Yellowstone.

Lenn - they could be what are called either beefalo or cattalo, a hybrid between bison and beef cows. They tend to be a bit smaller than wild bison.

Lenn - I certainly would have pulled over for that photo opportunity. My buffalo sightings thus far have been limited to TV and movies. Nice picture.

Mike.  I thought so too but the look is definately Buffalo.  Not anything like any of the photos of beefalo I can find.

Judy.  HA!  I spotted them, turned around and came back for the photo.  It happens often.

Lenn,

That's quite a sighting. I read that buffalo meat is very lean, and healthier than beef, but still htte healthiest meat is tofu (LOL)

Hi Lenn, They are so wonderful to see.  We used to have a herd nearby, I think they are just so much more interesting to watch than cattle -- but then they disappeared.... must have gone on to the great grazing grounds in the sky :-(

Before Allied bought up all the land, I used to live on 659 (aka Belmont Ridge Rd/Gum Springs Rd) btwn 50 and 234 (Aldie area - Chantilly address).  Our property sat between Thistlewood (Buffalo) farm, Karanak (sheep) farm, Thomas (cattle) farm and Ticonderoga (Christmas tree) farm.  When it snowed a lot, fences fell down, or animals could climb the fences - it was amazing what would migrate into our yard!!

I remember a high school friend was driving down 621 (aka Evergreen Mills Rd) in Aldie and came around a corner and hit (and killed) a pregnant cow in the road.  She turned in her drivers license and vowed never to drive again.  Ironically, she was a vegatarian.

Gotta love living in Loudoun!

Jon.  Yep.  I'll go with the tofu.  It may be lean but . . . .

Mary.  I'd be willing to bet that they are filling some freezers.

Vicky.  My goodness.  I once his a steer in a field.  He walked right in front of me.  I just loaded my shotgun and put the poor thing out of his misery.  I found the owner who gave me fishing rights on his land and let him know.  "Don't worry Lenn, we were about to slaughter one soon.  You saved me the trouble.  I'll load him up and take him to the butcher."

I love country folk.

Bryant.  In a past life, I'd have enjoyed one too, and in fact have.
