Edmonds School District Gets an Espresso Machine

According to the June 6, 2007 Seattle Times, the Edmonds School District has recently purchased a new espresso machine for the district's administrative offices, costing $15,000.

I can see how this might raise a few eyebrows among us.  Officials with the school district say the machine will make money for them, however.  The machine is automated and they say it provides "Starbucks quality" mochas, lattes and Americanos to district staff for less than coffee shop prices.  They even have flavored syrups!

The plan for the new espresso machine is for the machine to pay for itself in about 20 months and then generate revenue for the food-service operation, which does not take money from the general fund.  Also, 5% of the proceeds will go into the district budget.  District officials say they added the machine to meet the needs of their market and are considering adding automated machines to teachers' lounges, such as they are adding salad bars to elementary schools.

The Edmonds School District has a plan to cut its budget $4.5 million and eliminate 35 teaching positions.  Spending $15,000 on a high-end espresso machine may seem a luxury to some.  Others seem to think that it's no big deal - that we have more important things to worry about.

Do you have an opinion?  Express-o it here!
