The person at this number is not accepting calls at this time. How extremely rude!

Last week I had a request from a lady to see property in a city that was some distance away.  Upon trying to call her back for a day or two I kept getting this extremely annoying and rude message, "The person at this number is not accepting calls at this time."

Again and again I heard it. When she called me back she said she'd had phone problems and we tentatively  had a time to look.  But for two more days when calling her I got that message.  "The person at this number is not accepting calls at this time."

I finally said, "Shove it!  I'm not calling anymore."

Today when I got home my husband was demanding a reason why I didn't answer my phone.  I replied that I'd received no calls.  He said that he'd called me on my phone, at my office and was beginning to think I'd been kidnapped.  (I did notice here that he had not reported me missing.  Surely he wasn't secretly hoping I'd gone missing?)

He said, "Here, just listen to this stupid message I got!"

My phone respone said, "The person at this number is not accepting calls at this time."  Rudely, he thought.

OMG!  OMG!  What has happened to my phone??

Well, upon investigating I discovered that my phone had been TURNED OFF for lack of bill payment!  My phone!!!

Me!!!!!!!!  Miss Dependable USA had her phone turned off for lack of payment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dinner?

No!  I've got to get my phone on.  There's a mistake!  After hours (seemed like) on the phone I figured out the problem.  When I took my phone away from a corporate account to a personal account they naturally changed my account number.  I use on-line bill pay and never thought about changing the account number that I was paying.  So my new account never received payment. I was putting money down a dry hole and I didn't pay my real bill.

They shut me off with no warning!  Miss Dependable USA messed up!

It's on again.  I doubt that I missed a lot of calls but I now understand why that ugly message is given.  And I understand the panic many people must feel as they get squeezed at bill-paying time.

Barbara, I paid mine last month---do you mean I have to do it all over again this month?  The phone man gets you coming and going it seems.  I have heard those messages too----will do everything possible to not have someone hear it when they call me:)

Barbara:  I have my cell phone on automatic payment out of my checking account.  That way I am sure it gets paid.  That used to be one of Mollie T Cat's jobs... but occasionally she would forget... and all hell would break loose.  So... with automatic payement... my phone works, and Mollie T doesn't get fussed at.  It works for us !

Now, besides being my "guard cat"... the only thing Mollie T is in charge of... is paying the water bill.  Which of course means... that every once in a while I come home, just to find that my water has been turned off for non-payment.  Mollie T cannot even do that.  We had a chat about it, she and I, and it appears she was just too busy chasing away all the elephants from attacking our home... that she wasn't able to get the water bill paid.  Kids !

Oh, you also have to love the agents that have the message "This person does not have their voicemail set up yet" WHAT? How hard is it?

C-Tann, what's the star 3 shortcut?  Perhaps I need to use it.

Karen Anne, I think you have a "Nutsy" in your house.  Mollie T could be just as famous as Nutsy with a little promotion.  Sounds as if she's just a little scatter-brained but so what?  There are lots of famous scatter-brains.  I think there should be a formal introduction blog shortly.  I'll be watching.

George, and don't forget the one about the mailbox being fun!

Charles, I never knew why those messages were given.  I thought maybe the person was out of range, no service available or that you could turn off your phone to keep from being bothered.  Now I'm curious as to how else that message might come up.  It does sound extremely rude to the one calling your phone.

Barbara, but isn't the phone company in the business of "rude?"  Sure gets our attention:)

Charles, repeat that loud and clear!!  Either rude or incompetent.  I hate  hanging on the phone for the longest.  I hate the voice activated questions that I have to answer and the robot has to interpret.  The person that I finally got put the phone back on after understanding the problem and switched me back to the landline people.  After hanging on for so long I hung up, paid the amount they said I owned and ate dinner which my husband had by then decided I didn't deserve!!!  LOL

Barbara, one thing I love about AT%T is that they do give me a call just before I reach the top of their deadbeat list.  This happened when, like you, I thought I had set up on-line bill pay.  Oops!

Barbara, Online bill paying and automatic deductions are only convenient if they are working correctly. But they can get messed up as easily as one character being off in an email or one digit wrong in a phone number.

I have a friend who is getting foreclosure notices because the bank fouled up on their service of automatically deducting her mortgage payment. The way it looks right now is that she will have to hire a mediator to get the bank to listen. That free service from the bank turned out to be pretty dang expensive for her. Kate

Kate, I've had a few problems with on-line bill pay but it is so easy I hate to drop it.  It was my fault, not on-line bill pay.  I'm sorry about your friend.

Patricia, I got calls too and thought I had it straightened out.  I also get so many calls from AT&T that are trying to sell me something, I could have hung up on a few of them.  Overall it was probably a good experience for me.  I definitely learned something.

Barbara, one of my daughters (another Ms. Dependable)  just dropped by to tell me she was setting up her bill payer all over again since her last bank just kicked the bucket here in town. I told her your story about the cell phone and she said she has been watching her accounts like a hawk in light of the bank failure. But that's another blog for another day. :) Kate

I have had that happen to me, an account number change and my money wasn't going to pay the bill. I didn't know until I got a nasty note saying I was a dead beat.:)

Kate, how wonderful that you have a Miss Dependable USA in your family!  Don't let her get negligent as I just did.  But I do have phone service again.

James, I think they did more than call me a "dead beat."  They cut me off!  That really gets your attention.

Pat, I'm over it.

I've had bills get stuck under files, in files, tossed in the trash; it's a miracle I have no 30-day lates on my credit. Spacing out a cell phone bill is easy to do, but yowza -- the consequences of it are horrdenous.
