Tennessee: Three Different And Distinct Places

By
Real Estate Agent with Tennessee Recreational Properties

Tennessee is actually three different and distinct places, each with its own regional flavor. Traveling from west to east, you'll find that Tennessee is divided geographically into distinct areas; western Tennessee, middle Tennessee and eastern Tennessee. Major cities associated with Tennessee are Memphis in the west, Nashville in Middle Tennessee, with Knoxville and Chattanooga in eastern Tennessee.

The Mississippi River marks the state's western border. As you move east, land begins to rise farther above sea level and rolling hills begin to take shape. The Tennessee River marks the division between west Tennessee and middle Tennessee, which is known for its rich farmland. As you travel east, the elevation rises to about 1,500 feet above sea level; this is the Cumberland Plateau. Fentress County, home of the Big South Fork, is located on the Cumberland Plateau, and sits on the easternmost section of middle Tennessee.  In fact, Fentress county sits right on the dividing line between the Central time zone and the Eastern time zone!

Eastern Tennessee is distinctively known for the Great Smoky Mountains. Part of the Blue Ridge, it is about 5,000 feet above sea level.

Well, of course, I had no clue!  I am geographically challenged so this is news to me!  Nice graphic and presentation!

I didn't know anything about Tennessee or this part of the country either. When I took a course in American Architecture in college, the professor have us a blank map of the United States and asked us to define "east." I thought anything west of the HUDSON RIVER was west! I grew up in Connecticut, tought in a high school in Pennsylvania for a couple of years, joined the Air Force and spent time in Texas, Colorado, 6 months at SAC HQ in Omaha (gah!), Korea, England, Germany....North Carolina, New Mexico, Florida....then 15 years in Maine and 10 in Vermont. Somehow skirted Tennessee altogether, as well as this whole part of the country. I knew nothing about the south except that it lost the Civil War. The first time I saw cotton in the field, my brain perceived it as SNOW!

Tennessee is BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for the compliment; that map spent some time in Photoshop!
