I don't usually send these type of emails . . .

Have you ever done that? What made you decide that the information in that particular email was worthy of the inboxes of your family and friends?

Value, a thought, a feeling to help them live better, have a better day.

What type of message do you send to your prospects and clients? Does everything you send, relate to who you are and who your brand is?

Many of my students ask about "still" using email. Social media seems to replace some of their existing prospecting, which is great, but I say, don’t leave email totally behind, have a plan.

Think about going through your database and looking at your top 50 or 100 contacts. Then assign a recurring task with them 4 times a year. Then, before you start the day, don’t open your email until you have checked your “tasks” and every day pick 5 contacts to either email, facebook or call.

What can you email?

Think about emailing one of your blog posts that is interesting . . . As you know every blog post has its own website, so just write 25 words about it and then put the link.

  • Email links to interesting articles from your area
  • Email links to photographs you posted on Flickr about your community
  • Email links to videos you post on Youtube about events in your community.

What are your ideas?

Some spammers create those "cute" or "inspiring" emails that are really a disguised way to collect "real" email addresses for more spam.  I've been sending that information back to friends who forward that type of email to me.

I am discriminating in forwarding or sending email to clients.  I think folks are inundated with email and tend to overlook items that don't appear to be of importance to them.  I like a newsletter - they know they can look at (or not) at their leisure.

I too am the victim of the forwarded "entertainment" emails.  Rarely do I read them...and even more rarely do I pass them along.  But I think that contacting 5 people, whatever method you choose to use to do it, from your SOI daily is a timelessly classic plan that should never go out of style!

I like this thought!  I am going to start sending out emails of value to people instead of scaring them into forwarding chain mails with threats of death and dismemberment!  I don't really forward those, but I will start to send useful e mails to people as a practice!

I have friends who send me a lot of forwarded emails they think are funny or inspirational. I find them to be a waste and just delete. Ever since I got into real estate I get a lot of emails from people trying to sell me the latest real estate plans and products. I have managed to unsubscribe from some, but not all of them.

That is why i try to be choosy about what I send out.

95% of all the forward emails I receive do not have much in the way of value and the other 5% either funny or slightly interesting. I never forward because I dont like receiving them and assume that the next person does not want to receive them either. I do show the real funny ones to my wife though.

Amy, realtown.com has an Outlook group also. I love Outlook, and I still use email for marketing.

I send or forward e-mails based on the person, something I wish those forwarding me would do. I like the idea of caterogizing my e-mail contacts in accordance with what common interest we have.

Good tips.  I run my day through Outlook.  I connect to all (well almost all) of my email accounts and manage contacts and calendars through it too.  Thanks for the Linked In Outlook group info Missy, I'll be sure to go check that out.

I agree with Russ's comments above. The emails we send out should be informative and helpful to our friends and family. Otherwise, they'll quit reading them. Thanks for the post!

What a great idea about emailing a blog post! I find that my clients/friends/family fall into several categories and there are still many who think of email is the coolest thing since sliced bread! Don't want to leave them behind! Great suggestions!

I send only ONE broadcast email per month to my referral base unless something big is happening.

They know when they hear from Melissa Kulikoff that it is important & they usually read it.

Less is more, if the email you send has helpful information that can assist your referral base and it is not filled with last years fall recipe guide!

I also stopped paper newsletters, waste of paper.  The usually end up on the floorboard of someones car & their next stop is the recycle bin.

I think picking 5 people a day to contact would make a huge difference to most of us, and I like your suggestions for what to send.

Amy.. A great reminder that we always need to send things that are of interest and beneficial to out data base. Something like the example about that contains a chain letter can get future e-mails blocked.
