WARNING!!! For anyone not living in the desert southwest (and for many that do), the following article may give you the creepy crawlies.

My husband and I have been living with bark scorpions since about a year after we moved into our beautiful Surprise, AZ home. Mind you, coming from Seattle, Washington I never thought those words would pass my lips.

Since the first time I almost stepped on one in my bathroom I have been ever vigilant in my watch for the next uninvited guest.

My initial reaction was, "This is not acceptable!", "I can't live here", and... "We spray for pests every month. How the --- can this be?". In other words, near hysteria. My husband wasn't much better.

"My pest guy" went above and beyond trying to find the source and helping to seal our house (there are many ways they can get in to a home if the foundation and doorway frames haven't been sealed properly). What we found is that they had found a couple of nice homes inside the block wall that surrounds our property. "My pest guy" sealed the wall on our side, then went around to the common area side and shot a gas into the wall. There were two spots where they, and their cricket food source poured out... and DIED! "My pest guy then sealed the wall on that side to prevent others from getting out and to keep more from setting up shop.

Ahhh! There was peace in our home... kind of. It was blissful ignorance at best. We still had occasional spottings inside and out over the next three years. I kept thinking eventually they would move on, go away, desist. After all there wasn't anything for them to eat.

Fast forward to last month. We just came home from a weeks vacation to the Oregon coast and in our first 3 days home I found THREE SCORPIONS in our home!!!! Mass hysteria once again ensued. "My pest guy came out once again and found a couple of places where the seal around the foundation had fallen away. I'm thinking... if it was that easy for 3 of them to get inside in such a short span of time, we must have another nest. In a trip to ACE hardware my hubby came home with the best $20 investment we've ever made. A blacklight flaslight!

The hunt was on. Gone are the days of being blissfully unaware. The batteries went in and I went on the hunt! What you may not know, is that these critters, literally, glow in the dark when hit with a blacklight. They cannot hide. HALLELUJAH!!!!!

The first night I killed about eight against the back wall, the second night I killed about six more, and each night after about one or two more. My husband now calls me "the Scorpion Huntress" with some amazement and wonder.

What I found is that they are centered around the back wall and a post at the entrance to our neighborhood on the common area side. There is one other spot in our raised planter/pool water feature.

Far from being freaked out I now have some peace. I know where to have "My pest guy" concentrate and do some additional sealing, and knowing I have killed the ones I see outside reduces the chances of seeing more inside.

There are many neighborhoods in Surprise that have scorpion issues, including some homes in Sun City Grand. I have personally seen many up in Trilogy Vistancia while showing homes for sale, and I am sure Sun City Festival and the other Arizona retirement communities have had issues as well. It is a fact of life here in the desert southwest but seems to be more of an issue in the newer areas. It is difficult to kill them with pesticides due to their "shell". Your best defense is to eliminate their food source (crickets primarily) and places where they can set up home.

What is interesting is that many people living in these communities (for many years I might add) have never seen a scorpion. And while it IS true that after years of pesticides and human habitation the pest issues DO diminish, I can't help but wonder what they would "see" if they had a blacklight flashlight.

Now... having completely freaked out some of you who want buy your retirement home in one of these communities, know this... my husband and I LOVE it here and have never regretted our move. You just need to know what to expect and be prepared. Oh... and stop by ACE hardware for your very own blacklight flashlight, unless of course you don't WANT to know who your neighbors are.

Kathy, timely post for me! I am moving to Texas soon and on a recent visit found one in the sink! I imagine I felt just as you did being from California where I've never seen one in person.  I was told to never put my shoes on without checking them first...now that freaked me out.

Thanks!

Alisa- lol  Glad to be of help.  For the first year or so I had the heebie jeebies.  It gets better but that doesn't mean I will ever get used to having them in my home.  So, until I've gonemany months without seeing one with my blacklight I will continue the vigil.

I love in a more rural area of Maricopa County.  They are a very common out here.

The small ones can be deadly for young children.  My son got stung when he was 6.  We were at my parents home.  It took three of us to hold him down for about 4 hours until the antivenom calmed him down.  Luckily we were at Graham County Hospital instead of Tucson Medical Center.  They said that there they will not use the antivenom that ASU developed.  They will just make them wait the 24 hours to work itself out of the system.

I'll be moving to SCG from Spokane in 2010 and the thought of these things gives me the creeps!  How do you kill them?

Loren- My sister-in-law was stung by one when she was visiting us.  I was unaware my brother had gone into our garage and left the door slightly ajar for a period of time.  I think that is when it got into the laundry room and crawled into a box where she had dropped some of the kids clothes she was going to wash.  She reached in and it got her.  She said she has never felt anything like it before.  We called poison control and were told she should take over the counter meds and to ice the area for a period of time.  The pain radiated up her arm and she was in a great deal of pain for a few days.  It took about two weeks for all of the residual effects to go away.

Catherine - They gave me the creeps too.  Still do, but to a lesser degree.  Please know that while my pest guy does do a great deal of work in Sun City Grand and has seen them at some locations, there are many, many people who have never seen one in all the years they've lived there.  You tend to see them more in the rural areas that are closer to the desert (like Loren has experienced), newly constructed areas, and newer areas where they haven't been eradicated yet because they've found places they can make their home.  In our case it is the block wall surrounding our yard.  That is why I see them a bunch up in Trilogy.  I haven't personally seen any out in Sun City Festival but I have to believe they are there since Festival is in the middle of the desert with nothing around for miles.  Also, when buying a home in the state of Arizona homeowners are required to fill out a Sellers Property Disclosure Statement.  There is an area where they are supposed to disclose if they have had issues with scorpions.

Also, there aren't everywhere.  When my brother-in-law and his family first moved to Arizona they settled into a horse property about as far north as you could go in Scottsdale at the time.  You would certainly think this would be an ideal place to encounter scorpions.  For years my sister-in-law checked her shoes before putting them on and kept watching for them.  In the 20 some years they lived there they saw black widows but never a scorpion.

In answer to your question, there is a gas my pest guy has that he can shoot into holes/cracks that sends them running and kills them.  Then we have to seal the spots where they are getting in so they can't come back.  Getting rid of their food supply is the first step and that is predominantly crickets here.  The gas is not something he uses on a regular basis because it has no residual effect.  He only uses it when he knows there are problem areas.  The black light helped me to identify the area where they had found a new home.  The residual product he sprays around the property to keep it free of crickets and cockroaches can kill the smaller ones, but because of their hard shell/exoskeleton it isn't as effective against scorpions.  That's why a blacklight is so helpful.  You can see if you have any issues and then go on the offensive to eradicate them.

As a follow up... after I had called my pest guy and told him about my night time adventures with the unwanted visitors and told him where they were concentrated, he came over with his son, his blacklight, and some gas.  He found a few more in our back wall when he gassed some cracks that weren't sealed but he said it was my neighbors wall on the opposite corner that was the problem.  He gassed a nest of them and killed close to 65 of the ugly critters.

Catherine - A shorter answer to your question when encountering an individual scorpion is... you step on them wearing a heavy soled shoe.  If they are on a flat surface they squish very easily.  Actually with their exoskeleton it's more like a pop.  (Do I have you all squirming again?)

If they are in the loose gravel that is common in our landscaping, you have to step and grind them into and across the gravel.  Every once in awhile one will get away from me but it is usually just because they are close to a hole or crack in the wall where I can't get to them.

I want to reiterate.  MOST PEOPLE IN THE GREATER PHOENIX AREA HAVE NEVER SEEN A SCORPION.  We certainly aren't their food source so they aren't out to get us.  Some of us have just parked our homes right next to theirs and they are occassionally find their way in while looking for food and trying to get away from the elements.
