Huntsville Tax Increase Update

Earlier in the week, I let you know about the debate about whether to raise our sales tax .5% in order to fund improvements, repairs and additions in our school district.  The Madison County Commission met on Monday at the Madison County Courthouse.  This issue was voted on in October and did not pass by a vote of 4-2.  Again on Monday the tax increase failed with a vote of 4-2.  However, with vote of 5-1, the decision was made to allow the voters to decide.  The Commission has the power to increase the tax by a 1/2 percent without a vote but they have decided to place the matter in the hands of the voter of Madison County.  This issue will be placed on the ballot in February.

A major concern of our area is that if the anticipated BRAC decisions bring additional families to this area there could be an increase of 9,000 more students in some of our already crowded schools.  School leaders are optimistic that with proper explanation to voters of the need our area is facing that they may have a chance at a successful vote.  I hope the voters take into consideration the needs of our students during this vote.  This half percent increase in sales tax will give the school boards the finances they need to borrow $263 million dollars for the improvements and additions to Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County schools.

I guess time will tell how we will handle the future increase of students in our area between now and 2011.  I hope that the voters will be informed and able to make the best decision for our area.
