I can't believe that some people just don't get it.....

Governor Pat Quinn is implementing his new taxes starting tomorrow, September 1, 2009.  The new "Quinn Taxes" are for:

  • CandyIllinois Slams Residents with HUGE retail taxation
  • Liquor
  • Soft Drinks
  • Beer

The result is 6 more for 12 pack of beer, 13 cents more for a bottle of liquor and 80 cents more for a bottle of liquor.  Let's not even get into the candy and the soft drinks.  Cook County, which already has the highest retail sales tax in the nation has had a plethora of businesses leaving the county.  Many businesses have moved just across the street just to leave the county, but still be in the same sales area.

Pat Quinn Slams Illinois to cover his programsGovernor Quinn said that this is to support road construction and the project of individual legislators.  What amazes me is that the governor is already raising hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions, through tollway charges.  Have they mis-managed that as well?

Ronald Reagan said that he could prove that eternal life exists.  For those Ronald Reagan Proves Eternal Lifepeople who want evidence of eternal life, they just need to look at a government program.  Even "temporary government programs" become eternal.  Just go and see social security.

I think what really gets me is that the politicians seem to want to care for the citizens of the nation and Ilinois.  However, they think that more programs are a good thing.  Like we actually want more programs.  All of them fail to think that maybe less taxation would be the best thing.  I can't stand politicians that want to be all things to all people.  If I ran for a political office, I'd start to piss some people off because I'd start whacking programs.  Yes, some hurt feeling would exist, but people how many new programs can you introduce every year without getting rid of other programs.

Well Illinois, we got rid of the Republican, Pat Ryan.  We got rid of the wierd and whacky and entertaining Rod Blagojevich (who just release his book today).  But we're now with a "normal" politician who just wants to raise your taxes.  Gross!

Ohhh...and invariably when you raise taxes so much, people quit using those products and the revenue that they had hoped they'd obtain is washed away from lower usage.  Cigarettes are the clearest examples.

All things considered, I'd prefer higher taxes on cigarettes and candy than higher taxes on assessed value of residential real estate.

Larry, they are grasping at anything. I looked at my phone bill yesterday, my landline. We have 2 lines, one was a kids line before cell phones. IT was 70 something, the taxes were 36.00 I dropped the second line asap.

There are so many hidden taxes, I may stop and add them all up, someday.

Larry, I can not for the life of me understand what policitians are thinking, they will vote for increasing programs and not even think about where the money will come from!  It comes from the taxpayers, the ones who pay taxes anyway.  Taxing everything a person buys would be an equatible type of taxes IF the other taxes disappeared.  Like that would happen! HA!... BUT if you think about an overall tax on everything, then the person who buys a $1500 car is taxed to his ability to pay and a person who buys a $65,000 car is taxed to his ability to pay.  The average homeowner is taxed to death in many areas and so are the working jills and joes.  Sorry for my mini rant~!

Hi Larry, looks like you have similar issues we have here.  I'm in Washington State with no income tax but a rather high general sales tax, while just across the Columbia River we have Portland and the rest of Oregon with a rather high income tax but no sales tax.  It makes it rather tough to be a merchant in our border community when shoppers get an 8% discount by driving a few extra miles!  John (belay on!)

Lenn....I agree with you....however, why can't the legislators just know that we don't need a new program that we can't pay for each and every day?

Missy....$36 for the stupid 2nd line tax?????  C ya!!!!!!  My wife had a hidden 10$ tax that wasn't being charged by our phone company.  They kept removing it, but it kept coming back.....C ya again!

Matt....gross!

Gail....I like the pay as you go scenario that you give with cars.  My point is....quit giving us programs.  Someone needs to take a stance...thanks G.

Alex....exactly what we're experiencing here. I feel your pain.

Larry - You really should get into the candy aspect of the new taxes, because that is the most hillarious part.  The way they determine what is candy and what is not.  For instance, a Hershey Bar is candy.  But a Twix Bar, because it contains wheat in the cookie part, is classified as food - and is not subject to the tax.

On the other hand, many beers contain wheat.  They also contain hops (and skips and jumps, I'm sure).  Why don't they classify my evening refreshments as food?  They should.  Not to mention the study that appeared in today's Chicago Tribune, showing that those who imbibe in the brew tend to also exercise more and, thus, be in better shape, than those who don't.  Hey, who am I to argue with a study?  So, why overtax the healthy?

Sad fact is, Illinoisans are taxed at every turn.  Sales tax, income tax, and property tax.  I am just a few miles from the cheddar curtain (Wisconsin Border).  Maybe it's time to migrate.

May I assume you are OK with the tax on tobacco then?  Personally I think there should be more tax on alcohol, afterall, more people die at the hands of drunk drivers, than do from second hand smoke.  Candy and soft drinks make people fat.  Fat people put a burden on the health care system.  If those items become to expensive to overindulge in, then maybe we'll see an improvement in the obesity rates in this country.  So, other than those taxes which you abhorr, how would you fund road improvements?

Alice...thanks....I couldn't agree more.

Patrick....thanks dude....I appreciate every fact, including the health fact.  I do drink 2 beers on Friday and 2 on Saturday, but I work out like a banshee all week.  Thanks

Terry....I finally have you pegged.  You are the person who speaks first and then seeks to understand later.  If you read the blog, my point was twofold:

  1. We already have a tollway in Illinois that collects hundreds of milliions, if not billions, annually.  Why can't the balanc ethe budget from what they have?
  2. A novel approach would be TO QUIT INTRODUCING PROGRAMS until you have found out how your are going to fund them.

Terry....I love an opposing view.  But it'd be nice if you read the post before offering comments that have already been addressed in the body of the text.  You're always welcome here Terry.  I embrace your opposition.  I also agree that fat people are a burden on the system.  But then again, that means most of the U.S. is fat since we're the most obese nation on earth.....sorry Terry....now it's my digression.
