Why did you start your own company?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with The Briles Company

Greetings!  Just last week I was asked by an agent, "Why did you start your own company?" and "How do you make it with all of the big companies?"  The agent was not trying to be rude, but truly did not understand why I would want to own my real estate company nor the aspect of making it without a large company name.

As I chatted with the agent, he began to realize a little more about the truth behind real estate...relationships and trust!  Clients choose me because of the relationship I have built with them and their ability to trust me!  As for "why" I started my own company...this has been a dream of mine since I was a child and I love the variety of aspects it takes to be a business owner!  (Some days are better than others, but the everchanging roles of being a business owner makes life an adventure!)

If you were approached by this agent (and maybe you have been), how would you respond?

Well . . . I'm not sure what I would've said. But I decided to take my show on the road because I felt that our name was strong enough in our community and that we had already built a reputation. I also felt that I did not need all of the support that a franchise offers, but could provide much of that to agents on my own.

Lauren, For me God opened the door and I grabbed it.  I wasn't looking at the time but it fell in my lap.  You are right people work with me because of our relationship not because of who I am with.  To be quite honest most don't even realize who we are with.  This February it will be my 5 year anniversary.  I can't imagine going back.  I LOVE IT!!!

We are like you -- a small brokerage -- but it works for us better than the "big boxes".

I for one am one happy agent who is glad you started your own agency.  I chose to go with a smaller agency because I wanted to work with people who I respect and trust.  Their is a misnomer in real estate that you 'work' for a company and I want to make sure that my name is next to a logo/brand I can trust!

My reason for buying *not starting, my own company is quite different... I just simply did not want to change bosses or jobs again.  I'd worked for the firm for 3 years, two as the secretary and one as an agent when my boss let me know if his plans to retire.  I'd left a previous job I loved for 7 years, but hated for 6 months after I got a new boss.  I decided to take control of my fate.  I also don't own a "chain/brand" and don't care to do so.  I've been approached many times over the years by this and that franchise wanting me to sell or buy into and I'm totally not interested.  Oh and I have owned my company since January of 1995 and have NO regrets. I get tons of repeat business and I love my career.
