Life Changes and Leaving Home

By

When you decide to sell your home, it almost always comes as a result of a major life change.  Getting Married, New Baby On the Way, Another new Baby on the Way, Divorce, the Kids are moving out, and sadly Death.  These are the big steps we take in life.  In the Real Estate industry, we have to remember that we are not dealing with industry, we're playing a part in people's lives.  It's a privilege and a huge responsibility.  More than just the packing boxes should be marked "Handle with Care."

As a Realtor, when someone asks me to come to their house to do a home evaluation, I ask them to show me their favorite places and features of the home.  It's not long before we're talking about how all of the kids in the neighbourhood would show up at "our house" to "hang out."  Or "That's where we used to put the Christmas Tree."  Families grow up in these houses.  It's no wonder it's so difficult to leave a home behind.

One might think Real Estate is all about houses and property values.  It's much more about People's lives, their personal values, and what it takes to feel at home.

True...it's funny when my Grandfather died I was very very sad and missed him so much, but when a few years later my Grandmother died I felt an even greater loss.  Why?  I think part of it was not only was I missing my Grandmother, but I also lost my grandparent's house since it was then sold....since my parents moved and moved and were renters the whole time I was growing up and them I married and my husband joined the navy and we moved some more....it was the only constant place and so full of memories for me.

We still own the first home we purchased 17 years ago.  We kept it as a rental, yes it was a good financial decision, but also....I just can't bear to part with it.

So true, real estate is so personal and emotional. Buying and selling homes is like helping people move from one stage in life to another

Hi Bernice - Great points and we need to remember them.  We're not just dealing with properties; we're dealing with people's lives.   We certainly should be sensitive to the feelings people have of their homes; their precious memories.  I like the thought of asking them about their favorite part of their home; those thoughts can become great marketing tools.

thanks for sharing...yes we need to remember their are people who have lived in and loved in these homes sometimes that's very emotional for the sellers....moving for anyone is stressful even if they are excited..it can be overwhelming.

I completely understand Anna.  We considered selling our first home about 4 years ago, to move up into a larger home, which, looking  back, would have been a fantastic investement step, and a logical growth step for us.  But at the time I just couldn't do it.  This is the home where we had planted gardens for our wedding, built a dog house large enough for a small horse for our dog, and redecorated the guest room to become the nursery for our new baby boy.   After all, we didn't just invest in our home... we lived in it.

We finall sold it the past spring, and believe me it was an emotional roller coaster.  This experience has really served as an education for me as a Realtor when dealing with my clients.

Thank you all for your comments.  I really value the opportunity to learn from the experiences you are willing to share.

Bernice, Over the years we all form so many emotional attachments to our homes.  They are an extension of us and they are a reminder of happy, as well as sad times in our lives. It is so important to keep this in mind when dealing with sellers.  Great points!
