Have Fun With Social Media Marketing,

PICWhat is social media? It's a group of activities that goes by many names but it's called "social" because it's all about getting to know people - and letting them get to know you and your business - in a relaxed and friendly manner.

It's also known as "networking" because that is the goal: to create a network of connections with your target market, and with other business people who share similar goals and plans.

Social networking is one of the least expensive and most effective ways to promote your products and services. If you do it correctly you can build a large following of people who are willing to recommend and help you grow your business.

Networking Do's and Don'ts

PICThere are hundreds, or maybe thousands of social and business networking sites out there on the internet. They all differ somewhat in looks, functions and features, but they all operate on the same basic premise: groups of like-minded people posting messages.

The trick is to turn those messages into conversations and connections instead of commercials.

Fill out your profile. Virtually all networking sites have space for you to enter information about your business, your interests and what you're looking for from the site.

Follow the rules of "netiquette". Be polite and helpful, never rude and pushy.

Look before you leap. Read the boards and get an understanding of the rules and unique flow of the group before jumping in.

Participate. You can learn a lot by "lurking", but if that's all you do no one will know you're there and you'll miss valuable opportunities.

Offer advice, tips, resources or links to useful information. Your posts should not be all about your business and definitely not constantly searching for customers

PICSet goals and a schedule. Social networking boards can become addictive(you think)and time consuming if you let them. There's always a new person to visit or topic to view. Make sure you plan enough time to be effective, but not so much that you can't get your other work done.

Have patience. Social media networking can be a great way to drive qualified traffic to your blog or website. It can put you in touch with a whole new source of clients and income potential. It won't happen overnight. It probably won't happen next week. But if you are consistent and persistent, it will happen.

Remember to let your personality show. People will remember and be attracted to the authentic individual.

Last, but not least, have fun!

Pat, thanks for the great blog post!

"Social networking boards can become addictive(you think)and time consuming if you let them."

So true. I've been a lurker here for some time and now that I finally started posting, I find myself here every day! :)

Pat, wise woman you...nice points...I sure do try to follow all of them.....maybe a bit too much fluff some times and focus on animal rights over real estate, but that is OK too...right?

Hi Pat:

Great points...

The bottom line is to have fun.

But we need to keep in mind that it's time consuming!

Kristin my friend-You have to do what is best for you and you know me well enough to know how I feel about animal rights. So you keep getting the word out there. Those defenseless babies need a voice and you are very good at it so keep up the fight. Have a great evening. :-)

Hi Toula-You do have to have fun and watch how much time you spend here. :-)
