Health Care and other Debates

By

The news media is devoting considerable coverage to what the President may or may not say in his address to Congress this evening on the subject of his legislative agenda on health care.

It has been disturbing to hear the President presenting a song and dance about Republican opposition and distortions which have been the subject of Fox News coverage for weeks.  When I see an articulate spokesperson who has the dedication and direction of President Obama unable to make a coherent case for his plans for the health care industry, I feel that I am witnessing an attempt at deception.

From my point of view, so far every bit of legislation produced under the Obama administration has been a payoff to a special interest group that supported the President’s campaign.  It would probably have been similar under a Republication administration – and I am not being critical of the President because he has not done what he promised in the campaign. Quite the contrary – he has been remarkably true to his agenda as announced in his campaign.  That is why I opposed him last year – and that is why I am likely to disagree with him next year.  But he is the President and elections have consequences.  I am prepared to have President Obama support a legislative program from the White House with which I may not agree.  And if the Congress in open debate with public input and honest discussion in the media passes bills which the President signs into law then the process established with the founding documents has been complied with.  I am content.  I may still dissent, contentedly.

So tell me, Mr President, exactly what you want, and be honest about the costs.  Then let the issues be discussed in Congress and in the media.   But do not ignore the voice of the people.  435 members of the House of Representatives and 1/3 of the 100 members of the Senate will stand for re-election in November of 2010.  This is the source of the title of this blog – We See You.

Marco Rubio, candidate for the US Senate from Florida in 2010 posted the following video on the subject for our consideration in advance of the President’s speech this evening.

But the topic (and the debate) about the future of health care is certainly appropriate for consideration by our Age Management group members of all ages.

Also posted to the Silent Majority group.

Ted,

I was thinking to link to Rubio's video, you beat me (LOL). I won't listen to Obama, there is a 2 hour 17 min webinar by Joe Stumpf, and he claims it is the last day, and I decided to listen to.

Ted - The president was very confrontational and drew the line in the sand. He did not listen to the July polling, what does it mean to drop in the polls 20 points and still say to the American people, whoever disagrees with the bill, we will deal with you? How is that?

Ted- I hope the American people can figure out you can not insure 30-47 million (obamas numbers) people at no additional costs! We are ALL going to pay for it! obama just sent out millions of emails asking people to email a pre approved letter to their reps. A President is asking citizens to lobby congress for HIM! Wow, he IS in trouble!

Ted,

One great thing is that Americans are beginning to wake up. 2010 may just be a year for real Positive Change. It does not matter the party, now we are watching and it is actions  not words that matter.

Thanks for the great post!!

I purchased two domain names for a new political blog for the silly season during the next year.  At the moment I am using www.WeSeeYou.us. But I may change it to angrymobhotline.com before too long.  We will see how it goes.

At the moment, most of the articles are about Senate candidate (Florida) Marco Rubio.  At 38 years of age, Marco has already had a distinguished career in the Florida House of Representatives rising through the leadership ranks to Speaker of the House for two years.  He is now challenging Governor Crist as a candidate for the seat vacated by Mel Martinez.  Governor Crist has filled the seat with an interim appointment of his best and closest friend with strict instructions to keep the seat warm for the Governor and not to get too comfortable.  In return, Charlie Crist has awarded his friend with an annual salary of $174,000 and an office fund close to five million tax payer dollars per year.

Marco Rubio is an opportunity for Florida to send a real conservative to the US Senate.  My second thought is to marvel at the potential and the future of this young man from West Miami.  Marco is the son of Cuban immigrants to the United States.  He is bright, articulate and dedicated.  And he is a conservative in the Reagan tradition.

I hope Florida makes the right decision in 2010 and I hope other states are looking for candidates like Marco Rubio to run in their states.  The election of 2010 is crucial and it is an opportunity to break the Democrat majority in the House of Representatives.  Then we at least have a voice in the process. (and a new Speaker of the House).

Thanks to all for stopping by.

Hi Inna - While I may agree with Wilson's sentiments, I believe his outbburst during the President's speech is not appropriate.  I disagree with President Obama on the role of government in our society but he is the President and is entitled to public respect during an address to Congress.

Joe Wilson has apologized, by the way

Inna - Where were you when the liberals were booing President Bush when he spoke at the Hall of Congress?

Wilson just couldn't take the lies that were obviously coming out of Obama's mouth, that is the real story.

Ted and Nick:

"H.R. 3200: Sec 246 - NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS

Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States..."

I believe there is no intent in the bill to offer fed money to pay for care for those here illegally.  Of course, we do now, and will probably in the future via ER visits, but that's another story.

So, where, in H.R. 3200 is there a provision for verifying eligibility for any Fed. Payments for affordability credits?  And are "Federal Payments for affordability credits" the only benefit afforded by H.R. 3200?  If not, where is the provision to block illegal aliens from sapping our country's resources for those benefits?

NOW THEY ARE UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS? NOT ILLEGAL?

Inna- Sell that to your liberal friends, the truth is that if illegal aliens are in this country, we as a civilized nation will not deny health to anyone. Period. So federal payments will be issued and that alone will put the health care system in debt, meanwhile Pbama claims he will sign no bill that will add to the national debt...yeah right.

David and Nick - right now anyone who is in this country, legally or otherwise, can walk into ER and they will be treated.  This will not change - but it's nothing new.  So yes, in a manner of speaking, we will be paying something for their emergency care.  As, I would expect, would any other country that you might find youself in need of medical services one day.  But that's not what is being discussed.  The bill specifically states that no Federal subsidies will be issued to illegal immigrants, i.e. if one wants to purchase insurance that is subsidised by the FED - they can't.  That's the difference. Hope it's clear enough for you now.

Inna - as you know, the part of the bill you are referring to only states that they cannot get "affordability credits."  It neither prohibits them from participating in the Health Insurance Exchange, nor does it include any way to verify, much less, enforce the prohibition for illegal aliens to get the affordability credits.

Expecting an Illegal Alien, who has already demonstrated a disregard for the law, to voluntarily opt out of some benefit just because the law says they should is as foolish as expecting a child to confine herself to one small bite of her favorite ice cream when a whole bowlful is put in front of her.

Without verification and enforcement, that clause in the law is a waste of paper, no matter how much you plead, "Oh, they'll be good this time!"
