The news media is devoting considerable coverage to what the President may or may not say in his address to Congress this evening on the subject of his legislative agenda on health care.
It has been disturbing to hear the President presenting a song and dance about Republican opposition and distortions which have been the subject of Fox News coverage for weeks. When I see an articulate spokesperson who has the dedication and direction of President Obama unable to make a coherent case for his plans for the health care industry, I feel that I am witnessing an attempt at deception.
From my point of view, so far every bit of legislation produced under the Obama administration has been a payoff to a special interest group that supported the President’s campaign. It would probably have been similar under a Republication administration – and I am not being critical of the President because he has not done what he promised in the campaign. Quite the contrary – he has been remarkably true to his agenda as announced in his campaign. That is why I opposed him last year – and that is why I am likely to disagree with him next year. But he is the President and elections have consequences. I am prepared to have President Obama support a legislative program from the White House with which I may not agree. And if the Congress in open debate with public input and honest discussion in the media passes bills which the President signs into law then the process established with the founding documents has been complied with. I am content. I may still dissent, contentedly.
So tell me, Mr President, exactly what you want, and be honest about the costs. Then let the issues be discussed in Congress and in the media. But do not ignore the voice of the people. 435 members of the House of Representatives and 1/3 of the 100 members of the Senate will stand for re-election in November of 2010. Marco Rubio, candidate for the US Senate from Florida in 2010 posted the following video on the subject for our consideration in advance of the President’s speech this evening.
