Small Business Tips~Becoming the Eye of the Tiger

Three weeks ago I had a problem with my eye.  I woke up one morning and it was red, scratchy feeling and sore. I thought it was just from an irritation with my contact lens so I took a self healing route and left my contact off for a few days.  Well, wouldn't you know that my eye cleared right up- the redness was gone, the scratchy feeling-gone, sore? no not anymore.  I was cured and I did it all by myself.

Fast forward to yesterday, when I woke up again with the same symptoms.  The irritation was so bad that normal daylight hurt.  I felt like a vampire and as I worked yesterday, it was painful to be on the computer with the glare coming from the computer screen.  I ended up wearing my sunglasses just so I could look at the screen without wincing and tearing from my right eye.

Houston, I had a problem that I wasn't gonna heal by myself.

I went to the specialist today, an opthalmologist who is treating my eye aggresively. Initially everything would have been fine had I known the proper care to treat myself.  I had a simple eye infection, but because I did not let it heal properly and was quick to jump back into my routine---wearing my contacts after 3 days instead of letting my eye rest for a week--- my small easily self curing problem became a diagnosed hernia.

Hindsight may be 20/20 but without the knowledge it's hard to have foresight.

This hindsight/foresight issue can be tricky for business also.  Consider your business as the Eye....heck, let's call it the Eye of the Tiger, as most entrepreneurs are feisty and out of the gate self starting machines.  The problem becomes when you let those little irritations go...bookkeeping, marketing analysis, budgeting, new initiatives, paperwork....maybe you put a few drops of ointments on your eye in the interim.  It seems to do the trick and you SAVED did it yourself right?

And that might just last you a few months or maybe longer until that one moment....

You wake up and you see there's a blemish on your business and an irritation that just won't go away.  You can't ignore it 'cause it alters your day to day routine and can't get past it because your self treatment isn't working.  You know something is wrong and you just can't figure out how to make it work.

Your vision is impaired, because you don't hold the knowledge to make your foresight work.

It's quite simple, get some help.  Get some small business tips, advice, or assistance from someone other than yourself. Do not delay-whether it's paid, in-house, outsourced or from a mentor...get some help.

You don't want a hernia on your eye,

Let me give you a small business tip.  You want to be the HEALTHY Eye of the Tiger.

Hi Rebecca, great parallel thought between the eye infection and jumping on problems early. A correct diagnosis coupled with the right treatment is essential. Half the battle is identifying the problem and not letting it slide.

Rebecca, I feel your pain!!!  I just got over the SAME problem with my eye, only my diagnosis was an ulcer on my cornea.  There is nothing worse.  The cause:  too much time on the computer, not enough sleep, and depriving my eyes of oxygen.  Good luck to you!

Poor Rebecca!  I'm glad you are getting medical treatment by someone who knows how to fix it.  I once got something in my eye and wound up with a fungus infection that had some similary symptoms, but less pain than just irritation.  Suddenly I saw what looked like a tiny tumor on the rim of my iris and that sent me to the doctor.

Turned out that putting medicinal drops in my eye for a week completely eliminated the problem.  It did come back once, but I knew to go quickly to the doctor for some more drops and no problem in the years since.

The eyes are nothing to mess with.  This is a good post to make sure your readers see the doctor with eye problems.  Glad you're on the mend!

There is nothing worse than eye issues. My wife poked me in the eye once and it took over a year to heal! I like the parallel you used to compare to real life issues. Hope your eye is well! Take care, Sandy

Whew. I loved your analogy (sorry it took a horrible infection to get your point to us). I need a shot in the arm. I have let things slack for too long with this recession and lack of real estate activity in our area. Instead of ramping up the efforts, I have slowed down and intermittently tried to fix it with a bandaid when I realized it (my busuness) was hurting, but I didn't give it the full treatment it deserved. Thanks for the boost!

Diana-Do you know that my eye is still mending? Much better but had I heeded the signs from the get go it wouldn't have taken this long to heal.
