The Social Media Revolution! Do you BELIEVE?

In the last couple of months, I have had the awesome opportunity to work with Brad Andersohn and Bob Steward from ActiveRain.  We all put together a very successful event in Phoenix, AZ for the Real Estate Industry which drew 470 REALTORS to the event.

Through the planning, I conducted research and also had the opportunity to converse with Real Estate Professionals about Social Media's effect on our industry.  What I discovered was that most professionals I spoke with fell under the following categories:

SOCIAL MEDIA?

  • What is it?
  • I wouldn't even know what to write about.
  • I've been trying to find the time to learn more about it
  • That is just a fad and a waste of time!
  • There is no way to introduce Social Media into my business model.
  • I don't even know where to begin!

What most of these people don't understand is that we rapidly have moved into an age where we are in the need for instant communication and the need to be able to effectively communicate to a broader audience who are turning more & more each day to the internet for information, products and services.  If any of these questions and/or doubts have crossed your mind, I advise clicking on the YouTUBE Icon and watching a very interesting video on the statistics and effect of Social Media.

The million dollar questions are..

  • Is this a fad or not?
  • How do we effectively communicate to an audience of 300+ people in a given month while still trying to do our day-to-day processes?
  • What do we write?
  • How do we find our voice?
  • How do we find the time to write?

These are all things that we Rainmakers have battled with at some point or another. In fact, we still are.  For some of us, we are still waiting for this to fade away. We are still wondering if our audience is listening. We are battling with our content.  We are asking "Where is MY DAMN VOICE?". We battle with our time.   One of the many great things I learned from Brad Andersohn, was that you can find the answer to these questions by simply taking a visit into your "Sent Folder". We spent countless hours, if not years, consulting our clients via email. All we have to do is the obvious.

By the way thanks Brad for the great tips!

Hi Ted. It still amazes me how some people don't want to use social media as a tool for their business. A fad? No.... It is the present... and the future.

Ted,

Obviously, it's here to stay. And the younger the clients, the more likely they will find you through some social media environment.

It is funny how many agents resist social networking when it is so obvious that it is here to stay.

It's not a fad.  It's only the beginning for what we know of the internet.  who knows where it will lead to.

That You Tube video tells it all. Social media is here to stay.  I had no idea YouTube was the second largest search engine.  Tells me where I need to focus more.  Anyone who is resistant is definitely going to be left out of the crowd.

Ted - The effects of Social Media are here to stay and those that don't embrace it will find themselves behind the eight-ball.  I find it amazing that with today's technology there are still so many agents who have yet to get a website let alone participate in a Social Media network.

Hi Ted -- If it were a fad, AR would have 5 members.  I would love to see an AR ticker tape with a current tally of total commission dollars earned by all members from AR.

I don't think it's a fad.  I do struggle with finding the time, and find it anyway because it's made a tremendous difference in my business.

Social media is the big equalizer. . . I'm competing with homes.com for a top spot on Goggle and they are slowly losing ground. AR is a huge part of my social media success

I wanted to make blogging work about two years ago but wasn't sure exactly how to get it off the ground.  And the blogging platform I signed up for wasn't the help they'd promised to be.  Then came AR.  What a great support system & all round education place.

Ted: I'm pretty involved in social media for my business. The one thing it has allowed me to do is build relationships that started online and moved to face-to-face interactions. I think that is key in our business. Otherwise, I'm not sure it works to just be online. I know that people search online for real estate but all of my business comes from referrals and I would challenge anyone to look at where their business is coming from. I remember asking a realtor if he could show the results from all his online efforts. He admitted he couldn't. In other words, he loved doing it but wasn't getting any business. If we're engaging in pleasing activities, that won't grow our business. For me, the jury is still out. I participate because I can learn and I feel like I need to be on the cutting edge. But, again, people need to define their business and where is comes from. That should determine where they need to spend their time. Thanks for the post!

Paul.. You are right in that a RE pro should never abandon the fundamentals of our business. However, most RE pros that are interested in Social Media are not doing it correctly.  Most will try then leave it after not seeing results after a couple of months.   Of course Social Media is the hot topic but few understand that like everything, you get back what you put in.  This is not easy!  That is the big misconception.  It's just like the current market, I hear time in and time out that this market is hard!  Well from what I remember this is the way it use to be before the bust.  Our industry has become complacent (in general).  Everyone is busy saying "Shucks! I have to contact my clients!"  Blogging and Social Media is work and it will take time to get good at it where it generates revenue.  I am sure many on this post are making money from it and I can tell you of countless of others that are too.

IN the end, I will agree that many will fail, they'll never see a dime from it and also that we all should never abandon the fundamentals of what we do.

Have a great weekend!
