What Motivates Me

I am ALWAYS amazed at what some of the most successful (plug in your own definition of success) people in life have been through in order to reach their goals.  I can lose myself for hours reading biographies about the worlds most successful & influential people.

Success, as it turns out, is defined differently by EVERYONE.  Poll a group of people about what their definition of success is and you’ll get a hundred different answers.

My definition of success is  a BALANCE of fiinancial, emotional, physical, AND religious affluency.   I know affluency is normally associated with possessions or financial wealth, but I love that word and believe it can be applied to ANYTHING.  When your family life is right you CAN be EMOTIONALLY RICH.   When you have a strong relationship and an unwavering faith inyour creator you can be SPIRITUALLY WEALTHY, and so on and so on.

There are a variety of things that motivate me.  My greatest source of motivation is my family–begining with my wife & kids.  They are the reason I can work myself to exhaustion, the reason I am up at 5 am hitting the gym,  the reason I pray with them EVERY night, and the reason I spend time REALLY getting to KNOW them.

My second source of inspiration are the nay-sayers.  I LOVE people that say that something can’t be done.  These people are usually passed up by other people who accomplish precisely what they said couldn’t be done.  Worse yet–they say these things based on their OWN insecurities & fears!  I’m not unrealistic.  I know I can’t develop feathered wings and fly, but if my goal is flying–then damnit, I’m gonna find a way to fly.  It’s not the “HOW” that is important.  It’s the final destination.  So go ahead, tell me that I can’t accomplish something or that I’m being unrealistic.  All that does is set me off on a brainstroming mission.  Go ahead, call me the Mad Scientist.  Thomas Edison did in fact FAIL OVER ONE THOUSAND TIMES before SUCCESSFULLY creating the LIGHT BULB.

Lastly, I find great satisfaction in CONTRIBUTING.  There is something to be said about the people who give their time to the causes they believe in.  I’m not going to get into all the causes I persoally believe in, but the satisfaction that comes from improving other people’s lives intentionally or unintentionally is PRICELESS.  I believe that EVERY ONE of US was placed on this earth TO CONTRIBUTE in some way, shape, or form.  PERIOD.   I consider it BLASPHEMY when someone DOES NOT USE their GOD GIVEN TALENTS to CONTRIBUTE to society and in MANY cases to the WORLD.   LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE!

I’ve been on my soap box too long.  Feel free to let me know what motivates you.

Great article Paul.  What motivates me is the process of getting to my goal because the process is always better than the actual goal.  My wife and son also motivated me as well.

GOOD POST PAUL.

The title caught my attention. My motivation is hitting my goals and exceed peoples expectations... It's a great feeling when someone says I din't know you would do that or "I didn't know realtors did all of this"..   Lets all get motivated and get the most out of life!

Motivation is different for everyone.  From your article it seems that your motivation should not lead to unbalance.

When I was in corporate America, I was motivated by praise, stock options, and bonuses. I don't mind working hard if I see the rewards of this hard work.

I have found RE to be so different! Only my pay check and praise from customers motivate me. I struggle horribly when I don't see the paycheck - - as you can imagine, the past 2 years have been a HUGE challenge for me.
