A New Wave of Reciprocal Links that Actually Works!

By
Real Estate Agent with Dakno Marketing

We all know that link exchanges are a thing of the past. Google sees right though all the proverbial “back scratching” links. The fact that they were so exploited lost almost all of their value. But with today’s Real Estate Agent using many different websites in their online presence, it just may be a good time to take another look at reciprocal links. But this time, from a totally unique approach!

Disclaimer

Before we jump too far into this, it’s important to understand the different types of Search Optimization techniques. Black Hat techniques try to exploit search engines and find loopholes. Their results can have a big impact but are usually short lived. In the long run, Black Hat Optimization typically does more harm than good. With this in mind, I NEVER suggest people use Black Hat Optimization techniques. On the other hand, White Hat Optimization always is done straight by the books. The theory with White Hat Optimization is don’t push the envelope, Just develop good solid practices that will benefit users and search engines will reward you for it. This is my favorite type of optimization because it benefits both users and search engines and it has the best long term results. With that said, I would classify what I am about to show you as “Gray Hat” Optimization. It’s not anything that will get you banned from Google but at the same time, it’s not included in their best practices. So don’t say I didn’t warn you. :-)

Now on to why you came here in the first place.

The reason why reciprocal links lost they luster was because search engines could easily spot the offense. But what if reciprocal links weren’t so easy to flag? What if instead of thinking about reciprocal linking as linking websites, we thought of it as linking people! How is this accomplished? Let’s take a look at the graphics below. Note that in the following graphics, different colors represent different real estate professionals.

The first graphic (above) shows a standard link exchange. It’s not very effective and easy to spot. Now let’s look at example two.

Do you see what’s beginning to happen? Because you have multiple online marketing initiatives, you can capitalize on multiple website from a linking point of view. You will notice that all of the links are one way links. That’s right reciprocal linking without reciprocal links! Now, Google is pretty smart, so to make it a little more natural, I suggest adding one more person in the mix.

You can quickly see that adding one more person greatly expands the linking matrix. And again, they are all one way links.

The examples are just simple ideas to help explain the concept. But you can take this and apply it to many variations. You can include your blog, your MySpace account, or other online presence into a complex matrix of one way links! You can even create links within your own marketing strategy.

Begin to think about your online marketing beyond just your website. Capitalize on your multiple resources and link up with other colleagues. You will see a big impact in your rankings. Remember, the best way it to build links is to do it the natural way - by providing good content that is worthy of receiving links. But if you need a little extra boost, try reciprocal linking the “2.0” way.

Dean: I would have to disagree with you on a few points. I have many clients that are on page one for Google. And they don't even pay me for SEO. It's just a result of having a well coded website. And you can still drive lots of traffic being in the teens. My website ranks #13 for the term real estate web design (page 2) and we get lots of traffic from that keyword. I know Google is a business that's designed to make money but I do not buy into the conspiracy theory of Google changes just to get you to buy adwords. Getting at the top of Google is not that hard as long as you know the rules.

Yeah, I have to disagree with Dean too. While the algos are always being updated the basic rules are the same. As long as you follow them and optimize correctly you can and will move up the SERP. As far as paying for rankings, look at mortgage professor, wikipedia, and the about.com sites. These sites rank consistently high on a wide range of keywords and they don't spend any money in AdWords. They are well optimized with a TON of good backlinks.

Dean you're a funny guy :-P  You gave me a bit of a giggle and thanks for that.  Also wish I owned some goodO'L Google Stock because I'm guessing you possibly do already or you're the person you're referring to whom is paying out the nose.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I've been doing SEM and SEO for the last 7 years or so and to tell you the truth it hasn't changed that much.  Yes tricks to get you to the top with-in hours or days might have changed, although basic SEO hasn't changed much at all.  People just make it seem more complicated than it is.

As an added bonus there have been studies done showing that number 1 or even 2 and 3 positions might not actually be the best places to be.  Peoples eyes are just programmed to skip over them and move down towards 4 and 5.  Just a thought to ponder ;-)

I have subscribed to your blog. Hopefully you can help me learn this stuff. I don't have the time or knowledge to do it myself, but maybe I will learn enough not to get hosed when I hire someone. Thanks.

Brad, a fun post! I have seen other agents start to this in areas where they developments too many reciprocal links so they would start another site just for linking to other people.  Seems to be working.

I hope agents really strive for quality content and powerful page titles so that their content can get picked up sites that really see the value in their websites. That way people will want to link just because the content is unique and engaging.

Great post and somewhat easy to follow.  Now I just need to implement the ideas here.  I have been doing my own SEO successfully for years, and it seems like it is always changing.  There is a real ebb and flow to this stuff.

Brad,

White Hat is for those who are in this for the long haul. Anyway, this one-way link concept is rather basic from the looks of it, so even I can do it. Why are the SEO techniques always changing? As soon as you learn one, another one replaces it, seemingly.

Hi Brad:  Just a quick note to thank you for such a well thought-out post.  I have no clue whatsoever what it means... but it really looks nice... LOL.  Do you have another blog somewhere where you post this stuff in actual English ?  Jeez I wish I knew what I was doing when it comes to all of this stuff.

I have linked to sites such as Search Engine Land, Search Engine Guide, Techmeme, Small Business SEM, Search Engine Watch, and the list goes on. I have done so because I either found something resourceful to my readers, something that helped to support what I was writing about or simply due to the fact that the site I linked to was the original source of my own writing. These same sites have in turn linked back to our site for the very same reasons. That is true reciprocal linking. So is this a bad thing? Is Google, or any other search engine going to devalue those links because they are not true "one-way" links? I don't think so. This is a natural process of the web and search engines are smart enough to understand that.  http://cheapproductsoftware.com
