Body Language Speaks Louder Than Words
The majority of face to face communication is not verbal, so to ensure that your thoughts and intentions are properly communicated to a potential client, follow these body language guidelines:
- Proper Posture - Your mother was right. Stand up straight and confidently with your stomach in, chest out, shoulders back and head up, do not slouch. Lean in slightly to show interest when you are speaking with a potential client. When you are standing be careful not to stand with your hands on your hips or with your arms crossed, as you may convey the wrong message. Standing with your hands on your hips can give the message that you think you are superior to your client or indicate an impatience with them. Be sure that your clothes are neat, if you are a man that your shirt is tucked in, your tie is straight (if you wear one) and clean. Body odor can give off a bad message too.
- Firm hearty handshake - Get a grip on this important communications component by holding the person's hand firmly with dry palms. For women, extend the whole hand, not just the fingers and be sure not to give a limp handshake or one that is too firm so as to give the shaker a feeling you are going to break their hand.
- Eye Contact - As listening is the most important aspect of communication, demonstrate it by establishing and maintaining eye contact. And, in keeping with communication, remember to listen attentively and not talk too much. I once received a fortune in a fortune cookie that said: "Confuscious Says: Wise man closes mouth and opens ears."
- Genuine Smile - Smiles radiate positive energy and show interest, excitement and concern. Before you meet with someone be sure that your teeth are clean (and the lettuce from your salad at lunch isn't between your teeth).
