Here in Chicago, our sometimes quirky, always offbeat mayor, Richard M. Daley, once boasted he would single-handedly make the City of Chicago the greenest city in the U.S.

By one measure - the number of buildings citywide with Green Certification by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - he has actually achieved that goal.

LEED Scoring Points are calculated based on certain included building features, including energy-saving mechanical systems, conservation of water, and the proximity to public transportation.

As reported by Blair Kamin in his Cityscapes Blog in today's Chicago Tribune, by LEED Count, Chicago has 88 buildings classified as Green throughout the city.  Runner-up Portland OR had 73 such buildingsSeattle WA had 63.  New York City had 46 Green Buildings, ranking them the seventh city on the list.  Los Angeles was 9th ranked, with 40 Eco-Friendly Buildings.

Only two years ago, you dogs, back in 2007 (when Yours Truly was only 2 years old!), Chicago had only 27 LEED Certified Green Buildings, and ranked well behind leader cities Portland and Seattle.

Several years ago, Chicago City Hall was planted with a lush green roof, invisible to thousands who stroll by the downtown building each business day (see rooftop photo via Kamin's post).  Today, Chicago requires new public structures to achieve LEED Certification.  Also, private projects seeking city financial assistance must either pursue LEED Green Building Certification, or, at minimum, design a Green Roof.

As a state, IL was ranked 6th nationwide, with a total of 936 Green Buildings.  The State of California ranked Number One - with 3,449 Green Buildings.

See Kamin's Cityscapes Post for the Rank-Ordered List of the Top-Ranked, LEED-Certified Cities.

Enjoy your weekend, you dogs!  Please . . . scratch only when you need to!
