Jimmy Stewart's Prediction: Chance Of Rain, 10%

By

Thunderhead from Signal Hill Picnic Area, Saguaro National Park West

Chance of rain, 10%.  Overnight low in the 60's.  That's what Jimmy Stewart, our Channel 4 Weatherman, predicted on last night's news for the Tucson area.

Look at the downpour in the center right of the photo.  This is a true desert thunderstorm.

When it rains here in our desert southwest, we rarely have the sort of storms I experienced back on Long Beach Island, NJ, where the entire sky would scud over with low gray clouds, and the rain or drizzle seemed to be universal.

Here in our quiet little community of Tucson Estates 2, (east of the Avra Valley, and west of the Tucson Mountains) what you see in my photo is much more the norm.  It will be pouring down rain somewhere else, while the sky above us is blue.

Chance of rain, 10%.  What it means is that 90% of the viewing area will stay dry.  It sure makes for a beautiful photo op, though, doesn't it?  Picture postcard perfect!  You'll have to come visit soon.

Nice shot!  That's an interesting twist on looking at the weather forecast.  10% rain but 90% dry everywhere else.

Mike, desert thunder storms can be quite spectacular. I seen some good ones in New Mexico. Nice Photo!

Mike--I'd take that 10%! We've been as dry as a desert up here. Glad to see your weather predictions are as accurate as ours. Beautiful photo as usual!

Teri,

It's never supposed to be dry in the "Land of 10,000 lakes."  I hope you get some rain up there.

'Lina JaneAnne,

Igualmente'

Michael,

I wish that we had a few photo-happy bloggers on Active Rain from New Mexico. It's a magnificent state!

Donna,

I found out when I move here that "10" (or 20, 30, etc) percent chance of rain means that it will likely rain over that percentage of the television station's viewing area.  Never knew that before.

Marcia,

Just a little plan...  See Carol's comment just before you.  She's implementing her plan. :)

Carol,

Way to go!  Twenty bucks!

TLW...ROAR,

I'm enjoying the blues song while I'm working here.  I keep going back and clicking the start button.  THANKS!

Lenn,

Your description is perfect:  ...a stovepipe of rain.

Michael,

There's a cure for that!  Come on back and visit!

Larry,

You're welcome!

Laura,

Good job on the new HD photo!

Crystal,

Thanks for stopping by to comment.  I'll see you in a few minutes over on your Kansas City blog.

Mike,

Jimmy Stewart, how ironic! An earlier Jimmy Stewartdid a radio program called "The Six Shooter"in which he described this sky. When I use to travel so much I often listen to tapes of those old shows. I loved his movies but I loved those tapes!

Thanks for another great start on the day!

Leolinda,

I have a patented three step method for capturing images like this one, and if you promise not to tell anyone else, I'll share it with you.  Just you.

1.  Always carry your camera. (Most important step)

2.  Stop the car and get out.

3.  Take the picture.

LOL!  I hope time allows me to catch up with you and your client on Monday in Scottsdale to say "Hi."

Bill,

I wonder if those tapes are available on CD?  Wouldn't that be fun?!

Mike, a gorgeous shot.  I can remember while driving, we could actually see the rain and drove right into it, then out of it...was really weird.

Hello Mike, that is a great scene!  Around here when we get clouds they sometimes to everything but rain!  I have those days where it would would just rain to let the clounds clear out!  John  PS - we do bask in the knowledge that we in Vancouver WA get about 1 whole week more of cloud-free days than they do in Seattle!

Also looks like a Texas afternoon thunderstorm that would drop five inches of rain in an hour.

Doreen,

You can get a framed 8 X 10 photo at the Wild Bird Store on Ina & Oracle or at Baker's Fine Furniture on Grant near Tucson Blvd.

Jim,

We certainly do!

Russel,

We love when these "drenchers" hit us now and then.
