This is kathy's story...please read

This is not my story but, one I think that should be told as told to me.  Kathy, an agent in the office next to mine didn't want to write or tell this because it involves an act of generosity by her and her motive for what she did was not recognition.

As agents we can lead rather hectic lives always balancing closings, inspections, offers, the deal that's about to fall apart and grabbing a quick bite behind the wheel as we are off to the next listing appointment. It was just such a day that Kathy sat at a red light in her new BMW trying to down a sandwich.

A broken figure of a man and his dog was just outside her window looking somewhat lost and relying on a cane to walk along.  She rolled down her window and asked if he was hungry?  "I can eat" was his response.  So, within a few minutes Kathy was back with a sandwich and a drink...he was very appreciative and promptly shared some of the sandwich with the little dog...I'm guessing his only friend in the world...the man remarked that the dog often eats better than he does.

After a little conversation she learned he was 82 years old, had fallen in the shower at a motel that he had stayed at...the reason for the cane.  He was also a VET and was waiting for a check that was late...which is the reason for him now being homeless.  Kathy needed to do more so, by herself went to the motel the man had just been evicted from to confirm his story...very sad but all true was the confirmation.  Kathy paid for another nights stay in the motel for him and his dog.  The motel staff felt badly for him but, had done all they could.

Once again she went back to the man to tell him that she had arranged for him to spend another night in the motel and again he thanked her.  Kathy wanted to do more but, alas you can only do so much.  She has yet to go back to the motel to see what has happened to the man so, Kathy does not as yet have an ending for this story.

I saw the emotion on her face and the welling up of tears in her eyes when she told me about this.  I'm sure much was left out by my telling and quite sure she would have told it better...she's just a little shy.  So, when you get a chance, give Kathy a shout and let her know how you feel.  She's a good agent and a good person and I felt this was a story you needed to hear.

On a lighter note Kathy was not going to tell her husband about this for fear he would think she was being scammed...and how could she be so gullable?  But then she realized that her husband looks at the credit card statements and that one night charge for a motel room might be a little difficult to explain after the fact.

Nick-when I click on the Kathy link there is no Kathy.  I want to comment to Kathy but I can't find her!  LOL  What a moving, moving story.  What a totally selfless act that should be commended. It brought tears to my eyes.  What a shame that people in this country are in those situations.  And others are about to be.

Heres to Kathy!!!  (wherever she may be)

Nice of you to share your friends story and her generosity.  I can relate to her thinking her husband would say she was scammed.  It is natural to be suspicious and there are so many con men out there.  I think she did a wonderful thing and hopefully that poor guy has received his check by now.

Nick - thanks for telling this story.  We can never do enough for our veterans.  My husband is a Viet Nam vet so they have a special place in my heart.

Sharon, I know that I've been scammed before and that makes me very leary when I'm approached by someone looking for a hand out...in this case, I think we were all well served by Kathy's act of kindness.

Jane, I agree and please thank your husband for his service to our country.

Al & Peggy,  thank you...I agree...what a wonderful world this would be if only more people followed her example.  I'm positive there are many kind  souls out there doing the same and we never or hardly ever hear about them.

Hi Nick, what a wonderful story, Kathy is a true hero. Good for her! Now tell Kathy to get off her butt and start posting some stuff so we can meet this wonderful person. She seems to have a bad case of "I'm too shy to post-itis".

Way to go to you for posting this, and give Kathy a big hug from me. All kidding aside, this is a wonderful story.

Andrea, thank you...I'll be sure to tell her.  I hope more people read this blog...it might inspire others to commit simple "random acts of kindness" that could actually make a difference in someones day or life.

Heart felt and great act of kindness because you truly do not know when you are being scammed.

Just one example of why I contribute time and money to so many charitable organizations, such as the Red Cross, Battered Women and Children shelters, Homeless shelters, etc.

Charles-yes, there are scams out there and you never know...sometimes though in your gut you just know you can make a difference in someones life with a simple act of kindness.

Russel-I think those are great charities and it's unfortunate that so many people in our country need their services and yet billions are spent helping citizens of other nations...doesn't seem equitable or fair.

Great story Nick, too bad so many people are so cynical about those who need a helping hand.  I try not to be and know that as long as I help out, someday down the road I may need that help and someone will be there for me.

Hello Ana-I guess you're talking to me after all!!

People are probably cynical because of all the scams, but sometimes you just know.  I spoke with Kathy earlier today and I heard another piece of the puzzle...it turns out that the gentleman is also a Katrina survivor who lost everything.  Many people know him or know of him in the area that Kathy found him and they say that he never asks anyone for help.

I hope none of us need that help you mentioned, but it's nice to know there are people like Kathy with a kind heart out there willing to do what they can.

Nick,

This is heart-warming that Kathy noticed someone in need and didnt' just say "Be warmed and filled" but put actions behind her feelings.

She might not want the recognition, but we as a nation sure do need to recognize these people and do more than admire, but follow their lead.

Mike-I completely agree with you.  Unfortunately so many of us are focused on our own frenzied lives that the less fortunate fall through the cracks.  Thanks for the comment.

Mike, I went back and made it public so re-blog to your hearts content.
