How to haggle with a Contractor

By
Real Estate Agent with Ebby Halliday Realtors

Are you thinking about putting your Frisco Home up for sale and want to update or are you just wanting to renovate to stay and enjoy.   Want your home pro to cut cost, not corners?  You have to learn to negotiate the right way.  In this extreme buyers market, you can talk down the price of everything from flat screens to televisions to summer rentals.  When it to home improvement, though, haggling is as risky as ever.  Even if contractors are more willing to lower their prices nowadays, they're still liable to get angry and to cut corners on the job.  We have a few suggestions.

STIR UP COMPETITION

Get at least three bids so you know the market price range for the job.  Tell each contractor that you're getting their bids, so he's motivated to give  you a competitive number.

DANGLE INCENTIVES

be flexible about timing.  exterior work is cheaper in the fall; interior renovation and decorating jobs Janurary through March.

TAKE THE RIGHT TONE

Play your hand and then shut your mouth.  If a subcontractor wants $9,000 and your budget is $7,000 then tell him and clam up.  He who speaks first loses.
