Get the Kiddos Involved in Selling the House

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty Oasis - Metro Brokers

Selling a house can be fun for the kids too!

If your real estate market is anythig like mine, chances are you service families and often children are involved.  I have many ways I get the kids involved in the home buying process - here is one of them that I have been doing for a couple of years now.

Selling a home can be stressful for parents - keeping a house clean, getting out for showings, etc.  At the listing (or later if the kids aren't around at the listing) I have then children sign a "contract" with me to help mom and dad sell the house.  I always have mom & dad's blessing of course first.

This contract consists of putting toys away, doing extra chores for parents, etc.  It also may include no complaining when they need to leave for showings.  I vary it depending on the age, and what type of help mom & dad may need with the kids. I  had one child that had a bad habit of leaving open paint containers out.  Her contract was to always put the paint away.

If the kids comply - with mom & dad's input - I reward them.  Sometimes its a gift card to the ice cream store, sometimes a toy store or Target gift card, etc.  Paint girl got a new set of paints.  Its never over the top - just a modest reward that says, thanks - and acknowledges their buy-in to the whole process.

I can not tell you how many parents have thanked me for this - they almost always tell me that the kids are so willing to help when they know they have a contract with me, Mr. Steve.  No nagging, no begging - their outside unattached source (me) has motivated them to help mom & dad.

Try it, they'll like it!

Is there anything you do to get the kids involved in the home selling process?

This is a great idea Steve.  I also would like a copy of the contract.  I am new and looking for any ideas that work.  Thanks for sharing this.

Good ideas!  I always give kids a coloring book and balloon at the listing appointment, and award them with a certificate whenever I stop by and their moms/dads tell me how good they've been about keeping their rooms straight.  They love it, and it does help to keep them engaged in the process.

Nice! I think getting the kids involved may even help get the listing. When you do get it, Mom & Dad can put some healthy pressure on the kids to get things done.

Thanks. Getting the kids involved works. A good way to start getting them involved is to get them to write a list about why they like their house... in their hand if we can. Only good things can come out of that. We first heard about giving a reward of some kind for them in one of the CRS classes. Good stuff, your post. Thanks.

I ahve heard of doing this sort of thing. It sounds like a great idea. Make the kids happy and you make the parents happier.

Steve,

Love this idea. To capitalize on this maybe take the coloring book idea and have it "branded" with your logo and tag-line. Create a custom coloring book about "Moving Day" so the children can learn what to expect in the coming weeks when their home actually sells.

Hi this is a great idea -- I work with buyers and I do the same thing with the kids - who are along to look at the homes.  I have them "play" real estate agent -- and narrate the "features" of the house -- it is a lot of fun.  I also let them use my electronic lock box to open the door -- they think this is really fun!

Good post. Yes, the kids love to be a part of the process and help out by doing something, if they are told what to do.

What a great idea!  Not only does this encourage the kids to help, but also can relieve the stress of moving for some children....  Thanks for sharing.

Doug - Honestly, I don't really talk about it very much as part of my interviewing for the listing - its just something I do after the fact.

Gary - More good ideas.  I had never thought about them making a list.

Christy - Thanks for commenting.

I LOVE this idea!!! I am so glad I read it and will definitely incorporate it - wish I read it sooner as I just sold two homes--one with a three year old and one with a five year old - this would have been great.  Thanks
