I know, you are saying 'yea, what about them'. Well first of all, I am not talking about the group[ that has been in the headlines (again). I am talking about the fruit from the majestic Oak tree. If you live in the big city, you may have no idea what I am talking about.
These little morsels are the fruit. They are about the size of an average marble, give or take. There are many sizes because there are many varieties of Oak trees. These morsels are prized fare for many of the forests inhabitants. Squirrels, chipmunks, deer, and turkeys to name a few.
Now I am one that sets food out during the winter for the animals. Not a lot, but enough to make it a bit easier for them to survive as the scrounge for food most of the day. Living in a farming area, there are sometimes crop residue that happens to stay in the field for the animals to look for. So many years depending on the crop type and the acorn production, I may purchase some farm crops for the animals.
This year, the acorn crop has been bumper even with the dry year we had. I have many friends in town with many a tree and many an acorn that they want gone. So with their help I have collected...
over 25 5 gal pails to use as food for the wildlife this winter. Not only is this good for the wildlife, but my friends are happy to be rid of the acorns. Win win!!!
I am happy to help because of this food source, I don't need to buy any farm crops this year and will save several hundred dollars. Again...win win!! So now that I have packed away my stash...it is time to cut wood to stay warm.
